Walking around today, I travelled to a few key places, where I found a water fall. Hope you like it...even though the day was overcast and dark...I think it came out pretty well.
Any comments/critiques are always welcome...as they beat silence. Thanks for looking.

Taken with a 5D and 17-40mm F4L.

Was this taken in Ithaca, NY? It's just beautiful.

Thanks Suzie...no, it was taken in Larchmont, NY. A ways south of Ithaca. Can you believe that I-95 is right behind this scene?? The noise levels are decreased, due to the sound barriers, but it's still pretty noisy in the area. And Larchmont is a rather 'wealthy' village.
Thanks for the kind words.

Amazing shot... good job!
What was your shutter speed?
inthedeck
22nd of October 2006 (Sun), 21:39
Thanks surf...shutter speed was 1/3 of a second, at f/16. Used a circ. polarizer on the 17-40mm 4L to bring out the colors a little. Also helps to slow down movement, since you lose a stop or so.

Very nice. I particularly like the detail and colors of the leaves in the foreground.

Apart from a decent composition the shot looks very natural.
Just upgraded to the 5D and 17-40L and am interested in seeing them in use.
Thanks for sharing.

i think so too, lovely colours. My only nitpick is that i think your horizon is ever so slightly off,(or an optical illusion) But it's a great shot!

Thanks all...I appreciate the comments.
Seaboarder...it's a great combination...and the camera takes very nice shots, once set up correctly.
Tina, I checked the horizon, and rotated it 0.2* CCW, and it seems to be level, when using grid lines. I will see if I can correct it anymore, but to me, as you said, it's an illusion.

Good exposure on the falls, i especially like the calmness and the reflection of the water just before it goes over, nice one

Print it frame it. This shot relaxes the mind... Lovely. And what a camera it is. The camera really shows you when you suck at taking photographs... I think that only a few % of my shots is a keeper. But that's the only downside I can think of for a FF sensor! Ow yeah and the never ending fight against DUST aaaargh.

Thanks Fi20100 & Frank_H, for the comments. Much appreciated.
SanderH, the combo is great. I haven't really noticed any dust yet. This shot was taken at f/16, with 1/4 second shutter speed. I have taken other shots, and haven't noticed any yet...but that doesn't mean it's not there...just not too visible in the shots.

I was reflecting upon your comment, in a good way. Just thinking about what I could have done slightly differently. Maybe I will work on the full size of this image, and see how it can be improved. Maybe slightly different crop? Let's see what I can work out.
As for the last two posts, Miner & agsthanks, I appreciate it.

Thanks CarolP. Much appreciated. I am sure there's tons of stuff up in Buffalo with all this lovely fall foliage. Although, I would much rather live in a warmer climate...hehe. Thanks again.

Figured, I should at least post the second picture up...to fulfill the title of the thread. Hope you enjoy it...I just had a great ole time walking around in the cold, with some nice colors.

That's a great shot. Do you have a hiking tripod?
This combo is arriving Tues. Do you have any preferences or suggestions for a C/P on the 17-40?

I like that shot a lot. Looks so quiet and serene, which after you posting that I-95 was right there is kind of neat.

Thanks. Yes, I have a tripod, but it's nothing special. Just a SunPak brand tripod, which is flexible for me, tall enough, and sturdy enough, that the wind doesn't make it wobble.
The CPL I have on the lens is a thin HOYA multicoated filter. Again, nothing too crazy, as it does it's job.
mws & kg...thanks for the comments, much appreciated. I will be back there, once the snow hits the area...should be interesting to see.

Well, here's the last of this series. I have lots of pictures. This one was heavily 'modified' in photoshop. Cannot tell if I like it, or not...but, for now, I will let others that view this thread take a look, and decide.

Apologies about the size...it's late, and I forgot to save the 'larger' version..and accidentally closed the file, after saving for the web. Hope you like it...

Apologies for the late reply...don't know how I missed the question. For me, I use a hoya multi-coated 'thin' CP, which does not cause any vignetting. It has worked well, for me anyway, but others might disagree.
By the way, Yonni, did you ever get the camera and lens? Didn't see a follow-up from you, or may have just missed it. Hope you like it, if in fact you did get it.

Neily...thanks. Yes, I know the last one was something I was 'working' in PS. The larger size of the last picture was better, but I forgot to save it. Haven't revisited it, as I didn't know if I liked what I did with it or not. I spent maybe two hours in PS with the last shot...tried to make it look more like a 'painting' than a 'picture' but I wasn't sure if I succeeded.
The second one, for some, might be a bit 'far' as it doesn't really show off the waterfall...but once it's a little colder, I will have to revisit...since the ice formations/snow would looks really cool with the waterfall.
Thanks again.

I love the colors, and the flowy-ness of the water. Fall is such a beautiful time. It is very calming. :) I'm not completely crazy about the composition, but I'm not quite sure why. Did you crop some off the top or bottom?
inthedeck
7th of December 2006 (Thu), 15:54
Yes, there is some cropped off the top. I couldn't help it, becuase the sky was washed out, and I didn't have access to ND filters. The CPL on the lens only helps so much, in scenes like this, where there isn't too much sunlight.
Nonetheless, I appreciate the comments. I will hope to make it a better shot, the next time I have a chance to visit...kinda hate to say that I am waiting for some snow...just to get some shots...hehe.
