I'm currently overseas and I'm stopping by Hong Kong on the way home just to buy some camera gear. I want to get the 5D and a couple of L's while I'm at it... I've been saving for ever :D

So my questions are...
Has anyone bought their gear from Hong Kong? Is it really that much cheaper (than Australian prices)?
And are canon running any rebates? Could I still get them on a camera I buy in Hong Kong?

Thanks for your help, I just want to make sure I'm not being taken for a ride.

to my understanding the rebates are only US, and if you live in the US the camera you're buying in Hong Kong is considered an import and if you have problems with it you will have to send it to the Canon service center in that region. (atlease Nikon works that way)

Yes, most camera gears are cheaper (some are much cheaper) in HK than in Australia. I remember helping my brother-in-law's Aussie colleague to buy a Tamron 28-300mm last year for about half of what it's sold for in Australia, just to give an example.

Regarding rebate, CanonHK dosen't do rebates. What a shame!

Have fun shopping in HK, you will like it.

Nah, with a proper receipt Canon will fix it here.

I would e-mail Canon before doing anything if the rebates are more important to you. From what I understand, Hong Kong prices are not as good as in the US with the rebates and warranties don't apply for US. My brother was in Hong Kong and he didn't get much because of the warranty issue. Oh, and there's taxes and fees on top.

Check out canon.com.au - there is a $500AUD rebate on the 5D at the moment (can't recall when it finishes)
With the rebate you should be able to pick one up for much more than $4KAUD in Australia

Have a look here to get an idea:

http://www.ygdragon.net/index.php?page=photo/cameraprice.htm

I think USA is cheaper, just an example: I did buy my EF 300 f/4 L IS at B&H in NYC by $1019. Here is at street price HK$ 9300 = $1219, just $200 more expensive !!!

And you mus look very carefully where to buy. There is a list of 2 o 3 sites very well reputation, but I think itīs not worth to buy there. I donīt know how much is in your country, but now you can have an idea ....

The 5D scores by HK$ 21.000 = $2750, may be not so bad ...same price than B&H, but there is going a $300 rebate !!!! in USA

And be sure to get it from a "Canon Authorised Dealer" to qualify for the rebate, not just any old store... ;)

Edit: just checked, rebate in Oz finishes 31st October

Australia is VERY expensive when it comes to anything like camera gear I'm afraid. We live in the land of ripoffs and dodgy politicians that pocket taxes!!!

If you know someone that works @ Harvey Norman, JB etc and can get cost on a 5D for you then it would be cheaper than from HK. Otherwise you're better off buying from overseas.

I don't think canon employees can get the 5D either as it's considered a 'pro camera'.

Thanks everyone for the info. I'm in Japan at the moment and prices seem to be about the same as back home, maybe a little cheaper. Living in Australia sucks when it comes to buying camera gear, it's such a rip off.

I'll try to pick it up in Hong Kong and I won't worry about the rebate. The 5D alone sells new on ebay for about $3700 AUD ($2,800 USD) so in theory I should be able to get it even cheaper than that.

I assume you know where to go in HK?
If not then try Wong Kok and Sum Shiu Bo.

Mong Kok and Sum Shui Po.

I think Mong Kok is a good place to start.
