Everytime I shoot I take a custom white balance and shoot all my pictures w/ custom white balance set on the camera. When I open them up in canon's file viewer utility the images look wonderful and all the colors are right on and exactly as they look on the LCD screen in the back of the camera.
However, when I used Photoshop's new file viewer to look through the images and open them up the colors seem to be off. When I double click on the RAW file and the RAW infomation comes up I have the "Settings" pull down menu set to "Camera Default" yet the colors are definatly not the way they should look. I understand I can go and set everything the way I like it and then set all the other RAW files to match that first image, but I'd rather not do that.
If I had to guess it seems Photoshop automatically adds some tint on the images. If that is the case how can I prevent it from doing that?
thanks,
john

I am noit sure that Photoshop's RAW coverter reads the white balance properly... I know in the ACR plug in PS was using it's own idea of a RW converter and it left some of the camera info behind... This may still be true with PS 8/CS ?
I bet Breezebrowser or C1 would read the Cameras settings better...

Based on my experience with PS 7 and the Camera Raw plug-in:
1. Take the white balance target shot in RAW (making sure it is exposed properly). Take the rest of your images, making sure you've set up custom WB properly in the camera menu and dialed in custom WB on the camera body.
2. Load in the white balance target shot and neutralize it with the eye dropper in Camera Raw. That will establish the color temperature and tint. Save that setting (to a file).
3. Now process the rest of your images shot with custom WB and use the saved settings or select "Previous" from the "Settings" drop-down options if you're doing consecutive shots.
Maybe you knew that already and were trying to avoid the extra work?
I am surprised that the PS Raw plug in doesn't recognize the camera's custom WB.

Breezebrowser does recognize the Custom WB setting, notes it in the EXIF date info, and presents the WB corrected image in its RAW conversion work space for further editing.
I love the many features of Breezbrowser; I just hate working across 2 applications (PS and BB).

i posted the same question on adobe's message board and got this;
To the best of my knowledge, Canon has failed to document how and where the user set "Custom White Balance" is stored so 3rd parties can't access it. Until such time as Canon actually documents it, you'll just have to create your own set of conversion settings if the camera default is not correct. Note, if you actually go through the process of shooting a "white" frame to use as the custome white point you can use that frame to set the custome white balance using the White Balance tool in CR and apply those settings using Apply Camera Raw Settings to all images shot under those conditions. . .not exactly like using the custom white balance, but close.
In any event, I suggest complaining to Canon for the lack of 3rd party documentation.
