View Full Version : Irvine CA - What to do

So, lets assume that I'm going to be in Irvine for a few days on business at the end of November. Let's also assume Bre is coming with me.

What cool things would you recommend to do/see for a few evenings during the week... and then a day trip on a Saturday?

It looks like there are quite a few things to do around the area (within a few hours drive) so I'm sure there are a lot of ideas.

I was also interested in driving the 1, but it's at least 7 hours to get up there to see Dante... perhaps a shorter trip?

Anyway, lets here from the Californians. What's up in SoCal?

What type of things are you interested in doing?

I live in the Peoples Republik of Irvine (so named for the high level of mandated conformity), and assuming a day off, I would be happy to show you around - or at least give you some ideas for something to do/see.

Are you interested in the Disnyland kind of stuff, shopping malls (there are a number of high end ones nearby - the Fasion Island being one), beach walks (laguna is very pretty), so cal dining (recommend the Gypsy Den for lunch, and the Cottage in Laguna for breakfast), the desert (lots), let me know.

Bring along all of your Canon gear that needs fixing, calibration, cleaning or just inspection. That's a unique opportunity to have the job on them done right.

So shopping Island is a perfect example... from what we've heard, it's just crazy and a woman's dream. Personally, I couldn't give a crap about it except for taking a picture or two... I know if we're in CA, we'll be there though... I think Bre's already salivating.

So, personally, I'm thinking about really nice places... places to take pictures of... places that my wife and I could enjoy a nice short walk.

We're leaving "the kid" behind, so Disneyland isn't on the books. I'm sure that'll be 5 years down the road somewhere.

We're not really "big eaters" and don't really like specialty food... so dining isn't a priority... not to say we wouldn't appreciate some recommendations on that either though.

It looks like (if the project is approved) I'd be in training on a Wed-Fri... and we'd try to fly in on early Tuesday... and fly out as late as possible on Sunday.
So, during the week, we're looking for safe, and nice places to go and see... without worrying about being mugged (if possible) LOL.

Petkal: The idea totally crossed my mind... given that there would be a 24 hour guarantee turnaround for non CPS. The way things work for me, they'd still have it lost inside while I'm trying to board my plane.
Personally, I was thinking about sending my gear there next time anyway. Mississauga sure seems to like to replace stuff... but I question their ability to actually fix things right.

Pretty good list. Just one minor nitpick. The Bristlecones are the oldest living trees, but not organisms. http://www.extremescience.com/OldestLivingThing.htm

Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles (about an hour +/- from Irvine - depends a LOT on travel times/days) should be open by the time you come down - see link below. It's been under renovation for the last several years. I think It is also near a shopping/sightseeing area known as Hollywood and Highlands.

Laguna Beach is also realllly close to Irvine. A lot of nice window shopping, good eats and photo opportunities!

The Oakley building is an interesting option. It is definitely different. I wouldn't set time aside to see it but maybe you can drive by on your lunch break. It is also within a 10 minute drive from Canon. But again, it depends on what you prefer to shoot.

Wholly crap Gary!! Dude, thanks for the list. I'm going to have to check that out in more detail. Looks like a bunch of great ideas.

OCPickle, if you check out my web site... I guess you'd see a lot of landscapes. That's been my point of focus as of late, but that doesn't mean that's all I'm after. But being in a "strange land" landscapes and cityscapes would probably be what I'd see.

coreypolis, the Irvine Canon center crossed my mind, believe me. I might check it out. Do they really clean your gear while you wait??

Postnmypix (Lisa): the beaches sound like a great idea, and being so close, we'll probably get there.

Rad: I know. Cal seems like a land of opportunity... man that sounded cheezy

Seefutlung: thanks for another list... I'm so glad you guys are pitching ideas... helps us out in the planning.
Since we'll only have one day, I think we'd rather try to do a lot of little things... or a walking tour with a bunch of sights or something.

We already went to the Detroit zoo (yay) and Sea World in Florida this year. I don't think we'd want to be pinned up in an attraction all day... it'll just seem like we're in another city. I'd rather see the sights of SoCal.

Something like touring Newport... or walking down some boardwalks... watching some surfing (need a longer lens - bummer).
I know my wife will like to do some shopping... and browsing... but I'm after something we both can enjoy and take photos of along the way. Something to give her new A2 some exercise.

I'm sure we'll just look out and be blown away.. sounds like an amazing place. Anyway, on top of the "sight seeing tour" recommendations... some local tips would help too.... like cheap public transportation, areas to stay away from... that kind of thing.

Thanks for all the effort so far... I'll check into all of this in more detail later when the movie marathon is over.

If you have one full day and you want to see the ocean and some landscapes then I would heartily recommend going on a trip to the island of Catalina (http://www.catalinainfo.com). We leave once a day at 9:00 am from the Balboa Pavilion

"We arrive in Avalon at 10:15 am

The boat leaves Avalon at 4:30 pm

It arrives at the Balboa Pavilion at 5:45 pm "

Balboa = Newport.

Done with my P&S on a crappy day.

Agreed.

Balboa is nice to see anyway, the the walk around the island is something we do quite often.

One other thing, that I am suprised no-one has mentioned. Samys downtown. A 4 floor camera store. Everything you could imagine and a few dozen things you cant.

Speaking of samys, the one in Santa Ana (next door city to Irvine) rents equipment. They might have a 100 - 400 or longer for a day of Surfers.

Since you only have one day .. and you're already in Orange County ... enough there for a full day just hanging in and about the beach communities. As to public transportation ... forget it ... the best and only way to get around is by car. I would start in Seal Beach and just cruise and stop ... cruise and stop all the way along the coast to mmmhhh Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano (great restored mission).

from North to South

Seal Beach (quaint downtown w/ a nice kite store and pier/sandy beach)
Bolsa Chica Wetlands
Huntington Beach (sandy beach and surfing at the pier)
Newport Beach / Balboa Island (sandy beach, harbor, harbor cruises, world class body surfing at the Wedge)
Corona del Mar (cliffs and coves)
Fashion Island (shopping)
Laguna Beach (pier, cliffs and coves, artist colony mentality, Hotel Laguna best place to stay- on the beach, Beach House best place to eat on the beach)
Aliso Beach (pier, cliffs and coves)
Dana Point (harbor, cliffs and a better kite store)
A bit inland from Dana Point is San Juan Capistrano with its Mission and Swallows

More South
San Clemente and world class surfing at Trestles
Camp Pendelton - home of the First Marine Division (USMC)
Pendelton is in San Diego County ... time to come back.

This is awesome guys... I've got too many FF windows open right now checking this stuff out.
The pics are great... nice to get an idea of what we'd be seeing.
Also, equipment rentals... hmmm... I wonder how much a nice 500 F4 would cost for a day. BAH!

Man, you SoCal-ers are really nice. Now I'm really pissy that I'll only have a day (plus evenings) to check this stuff out. This trip might just be enough to tempt me into coming back some day ;)

HI Rich, my wife & I just got back from SoCal on Sunday night & we spent one night in Irvine. It took us most of the daylight hours to do Huntington, Newport & Laguna beaches plus walk around Laguna & Fashion Island. It was fabulous! There is so much to do in that part of the country, you will want to start planing for another trip (we've been every October for the last six years)!!

Maybe we can find a nice all-around walk-about lens for ya... like a 28-200 or something. I'd be willing to sacrifice my 10-22 even longer if it'd make ya happy hun! (lookin for browner points).

Maureen, Huntington looks great... it's for sure on our list.

Scott... you're scaring me. Don't let on that this could be an annual thing. Bre's going to have the flights book until 2020!!

If choosing between Huntington and Laguna (especially if you have only time for only one) it is a matter of what you temperment is. Laguna is more artisan, with galleries etc, and Huntington is more rowdy. Laguna is prettier (not flat like Huntington), but no surfing. Huntington has surfers, a pier, but not much by way of parks at the beach.

Our plans are finalized, woohoo!!! We will be headed to Irvine/Laguna Hills in a few weeks. We are going to have 3.5 days to tour around.

We are going to:

- Laguna Beach, I really want to go for brunch at Las Brisas and check out the tide pools and surrounding area.
- Huntington Beach
- Newport Beach
- Rim of the World Scenic Byway tour

I do have some questions:

1.I have been looking into the Rim of the World Scenic Byway tour is it worth it? Do you need snow tires? I read they can get up to 50” of snow in the mountains and we will have a rental car.

2.Is Ruby's Diner in Huntington Beach any good? I thought it might be a great place for breakfast or lunch.

3.Also if you have any parking tips, please share them. I have read parking is a nightmare. We are used to free parking or $2 for the day. I think parking might be shocking lol :)

4.I'm so confused about what to wear. Does it get colder by the water? Would a sweat shirt do or a light jacket?

Thanks for all of your help :) If I think of anything more I will be sure to post.

Radtech1
27th of December 2006 (Wed), 21:16
1) Snow tires are most likely NOT needed. At most, chains. I doubt that there will be enough snow to stick.

2) Ruby's huh? Only if there is nothing else to do. I mean the food is good enough for a diner, but it is most certainly NOTHING SPECIAL. If you have been to Denny's, then you have been to Ruby's. Just imagine the Denny's server wearing THIS (http://www.rubys.com/), and then double the time it takes to get seated, get coffee, get your food...get the idea?

A much better choice (In Laguna, though, not HB) would be The Cottage (http://www.thecottagerestaurant.com/).

3) Be willing to walk a bit. Park a couple blocks from the beach and make a stroll out of it.

4) If you are accustomed to Ontario, then for us you will be fine with a camisole and boxers for Richard. Seriously, overnight low in Irvine will NOT get below 45. There may be some rain, who knows, but a light jacket will be overkill for our friends from the North.

I agree with Ruby's. It is a cool place to eat, they have good shakes and good vanilla Cokes, but I wouldn't travel from Canada to eat there. There is a seafood place in Dana Point harbor that has outstanding calamari. Give me a few and I will remember the name.

Wow, you digger!!

Sure thing, we loved it. We hit Newport and Huntington right when we got there. The weather was beautiful. It was the week right before the cold snap that killed half the fruit and was in the 80s the whole time.

The beaches were really cool and we made sure to walk the piers. We did "the rim of the world" driving tour through Big Bear one day which was a blast.... literally a blast of wind. Our GIANT Buick was almost tossed aside from the wind. It was pretty funny to see people having snowball fights on the side of the road. Being Canadian, it wasn't such a shocker to me... but it was funny. People were driving around with giant snowballs on their hoods trying to see how long they'd last. LOL

Thankfully I brought my GPS, which was a life saver. It took the stress right out of driving and let us really enjoy the area.
We made it up to Long Beach (had to rush back to pick somebody up at the airport) and down to San Diego. We went to Balboa Park but were really underwhelmed... we must have been in the wrong area because it was so positively suggested. Oh well. We did the Irvine to San Diego to Long Beach and back circuit, but the drive was fun.

We also hit La Brisas for brunch one day then toured the Laguna beaches... my wife really liked the view and really enjoyed that day. Thanks to whomever recommended that one.

It was a great time.. we're always talking about going back now (never thought we'd want to go back). Probably next time we'll check out LA and make the drive up the 1 to check out the bay area. We hear there are some cool tours around there.
Anyway, that won't be for years. Our next trip is to Arizona to meet with some friends.

Here's one of my favourite shots... CLICK THE PICTURE to see the other Cali shots from my website.

WHAT A FANTASTIC SHOT!

I am glad that you had a great time! Glad that you liked the Rim of the World. You did not mention it, but did you get to see the Observatory up there? It is the Robert Brownlee Observatory staffed by the Mountain Skies Astronomical Society (http://www.mountain-skies.org/astro-village.html). They have 16" f/10 Schmidt Cassegrain scope that has surprisingly good seeing in spite of the light pollution.

We like the Big Bear / Lake Arrowhead area so much that that is where Marcia and I had our honeymoon last April.

Anyway, if you make it back, I am sure that us locals can again come up with a list three times longer than you can fit!

Thanks!! It's one of my favourite shots right now... just wish the board was turned so it's obvious what it is.

No, I didn't see the Observatory. I guess that's an excuse to make the trip again!! Didn't even know it was there.
We did however see the Rim of the World school... which had "job" conveniently placed with spray paint. That was worth a chuckle or two.

The day we did the rim of the world tour was a blast. It was a long drive, but having a boat of a Buick made it easy. There were a few points where Bre was totally freaked out... traffic inches on the left... rocks inches on the right (it was actually a couple feet, but whatever).

I got so pissed off... being so caught up in the view for the first while, I didn't notice that my ISO was set on 800. What a rookie mistake... I even remember thinking to myself "WOW, I'm getting some amazing shutter speeds". DUH! Once we stopped the 10th time in a similar looking turnout, I realized my mistake and dropped the ISO. Man that bugged me for a while.

We did the whole circuit from the construction at the 15 & 215 and all around to the 38 which took us to nightfall. Follow that up with one of the best dinners I've had in my life at the Macaroni Grill in Redlands... and you've got yourself a day to remember.

I don't think it needs to be any more obvious. In fact, I would clone off the fin. It is too insubstantial to be a part of the shot, and I think everyone knows it's a board - even without it.

Macaroni Grill is very nice. Next time we will have to take you to Buca Di Beppo's (http://www.bucadibeppo.com/)

One time I went to Buce Di Beppo and didn't realize that each plate serves 2-3 people. So we ordered two entrees... I managed to finish a plate but that was quite a bit of pasta. A bit too much for one sitting...
My current favorite Italian restaurant is Villa Nova in Newport Beach. Reasonable prices and great harbor view.

I think I've lived in the Orange County bubble too long.

That's why I only work there now.

We loved the bubble... I mean, seriously!! It took us about 3 days before we saw a car with visible rust on it. And that was some construction worker's pickup truck. I don't think he got the memo.

I am sure he received a violation notice from the Orange County HOA. Rusty vehicles, vehicles less than $45k (hybrids excluded), and large animals are not allowed.

Maybe he was just passing through... or got lost.

The cops are watching him to make sure he doesn't park ... not in South County ... (maybe he can park in Santa Ana - lol).
