This is a photo i took of my neice last month. Kids and animals are a real problem for me where photography is concerned, as they just won't stay still! :D

Any and all tips/critiques welcome, whether it be posing, Post processing or whatever. I need all the help i can get. ;)

I'm not sure whether to take that as 'stick to landscapes', or 'try painting'..... lol! :p

Hi Beano, I'm still learning the techincal aspects of photography so I'll just comment on what I know... great composition and you have an extremely cute niece!:) . Thanks for sharing.

It's not a bad pic but the hand does hide a sizeable part of her face... I say try again. Kids are difficult subjects. I find that you have to talk to them the whole time. Make them tell you a joke or what their favorite TV show is and snap away between their sentences. :)

I like it. The face does seem a bit underexposed by about 1 stop. (But then I'm new at this portrait stuff myself too.) The arm is "disembodied"...perhaps remember to include the whole arm (among the 437 other things you have to remember when doing portrait shots :-D )

Thanks for the tips Montreal, i think i just need to try this sort of photography more often; it feels completely alien to me to be honest.

hehe! I hear ya there Paul! :D

I didn't even think about the arm, mainly because it came up at the last second and shouldn't have been there anyway!?! But even afterwards, it didn't occur to me that it would look disembodied, but now that you mention it! :o

Cheers

Didn't occur to me either... But now I do realize that it could very well be somebody else's arm, for all we know... This is the reason I come here... I learn so much :)

Scott, kids are hard to photograph. I have had my share with my little cousins. What you might also try is to take a photograph of them and then show them the picture in the LCD. They might warm up to that. But sometimes it can backfire. Now every single time I take pictures of my little cousins they run up to me yelling, "let me see, let me see."

Let me ask you this, when you started taking landscapes, was it alien to you then too? I say keep at it. I believe you will be happy with some of the images you capture. I know I have.

The reward with kids photos is that no matter how crappy you think your product is mommy is always going to love it :p Unless she's a photographer herself...

hehe! I tried the LCD thing, but then every time i picked up the camera, she wanted to pose for the shot, and i was after sometehing a little more candid. I think half of my problem is that i take too long with the shot; far too much faffing about. :D

Not so much, because capturing landscapes was my reason for taking up photography. It's only really since getting a DSLR that i've started to get inspired again, and other aspects of photography have started to appeal!?!

:D Very true. Only problem is, if i don't love it, mommy's never gonna see it lol! :p
