Haven't been on the forum for a while but I have a problem with Elements 4.0... I am shooting some RAW photos lately thinking I could learn Elements 4.0 better.... I can get the Raw files loaded on my computer with Elements 4.0 with no problem at all.... I can play with the levels & save to a .DNG file with no problem.... HOW do I save the file in .JPEG or can I in Elements 4.0???... Will I need to upgrade to Elements 5.0?????... Many Thanks in advance...

Bob,
Find Image mode, I don't have Element so I'm not sure what its under, on the top drop down menu and change the mode from 16-8 bit this will allow you to save the images as JPEGS.

Make sure you are not trying to save as a 16-bit file during your conversion.

I know it's just me.... I tried saving the Raw CR2 file & making sure it was 8 bit mode..... The saving window box did not give me a JPEG choice, only DNG & dng

When opening a RAW file in PSE4 you still get ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) correct? Here you can change things like exposure, WB, etc. At the bottom left is a section for Color space, resolution, etc. Bottom right is Save, Cancel, Open, and Done.
EDIT: That lost post makes me think you are using the DNG convertor and not Adobe Camera RAW.

Well now I am really confused, I have Elements 4.0 & it will convert Raw (CR2) files to DNG..... Is Adobe Camera RAW. a separate or plug-in that I will need?

Assuming you have windows see this link (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows). Notice that there is a DNG convertor and a RAW convertor. It looks like the DNG convertor also includes the RAW convertor, though. Sorry to confuse you. Do you see the stuf I listed before when you open a RAW file? Can you post a screen shot?

I just moved the Raw 8bi file & downloaded the Raw 3.5 version, moved the new Raw 3.5 to the same location & restarted the computer.... Still does the exact same thing... No JPEG selection (only DNG).... If I load a JPEG file I get the normal editing window..... If I load a Raw CR2 file it goes to a different window.... Don't know how to show you the windows??

Instead of trying to save right away, choose to open the photo. Once in the editor you can save as .jpg. For whatever reason, they don't let you save to .jpg directly from the RAW converter.

You must have CS2, my 4.0 doesn't look like this.... I have 3 check box choices that deal with DNG files...... NO Jpeg....

I do have CS2 but I thought that they all used the same stuff for ACR. Guess not.:o Sorry I couldn't help.

Here's what that screen looks like in PSE 4. Note there's no place to choose any format but DNG:

What a bummer. I guess you have to use the work around you mentioned earlier. Again sorry for the mistake.

Guess we all learned something.... I may download a trial version (30 day) of 5.0 & see what it does for Raw files to Jpeg.... I assume that the free download won't mess up my 4.0....??

I don't think so. Typically each version is a new install (at least it is with full PS versions).

Dang, the Elements 5.0 is the same thing as the 4.0.... The Editor is different though...... Hate to have to buy CS2 to get the job done.... Are there earlier versions before CS2 that will deal with the Raw files to Jpeg coversion???

Yes. For your 20D you could use CS, but if you upgrade your camera then you have to upgrade PS also.

Did you try this? It's an extra step, but it works.

This is what I was suggesting. It would seem to be worth the step if you didn't want to pay $299:

The OPEN works....
My daughter is going to get CS2 for me so I would rather learn CS2 than Elements 4.0 or 5.0.....
Thanks everyone,
Bob
