Hi, being a newbie to RAW images and having only every shot jpeg previously can anyone recommend a good piece of software for RAW image manipulation and conversion for the Windows platform?
Regards
Paul.

there are several possibilities. CaptureOne i.e. is very good for converting RAW files. Or the new Photoshop CS also can convert RAW files.

I haven't tried Photoshop CS ("Photoshop 8") yet, but can certainly confirm the Capture One DSLR is an outstanding package for processing and converting raw format files. However, it should be noted that both of these software packages are rather expensive. Alternatives include the excellent BreezeBrowser and, of course, the conversion software supplied with the camera.

I've been using BreezeBrowser for about 6 months. I'm very happy with it.

I use th Capture 1 rebel edition. If you own a Drebel, you only pay 49USD for this sotware. I can tell you it is great !
You can download a full operational test version valid for 2 weeks

I've just discovered the joys of RAW conversion with Photoshop CS. Capture One offers a few more trick features, but CS is so easy to use.

I'll second the Capture 1 - Drebel edition. It's a bit easier to use than the Canon supplied SW. It has sliders to change any of the parms and you don't have to wait for the changes to "load". CS might be a good option but for $50, C1 is pretty decent. I'm going to have to wait a bit for CS and just use elements 2.0 until after I buy my 70-200 2.8L.
Are there any plugins for importing .CRW files to elements 2.0?

Something that I believe is worth mentioning about the Capture One range....
As soon as you are satisfied with the parameters of one raw image - or a batch of images - and tell the software to convert it / them, you can start looking at the next image(s) whilst the program converts them in the background. This may not sound very impressive, but if you try it I am confident that, like me, you will find that it removes so much tedium from your workflow that you will wonder how it could be done any other way!
Just my opinion. :)
