I was hired to shoot the house band and Deryl Dodd this past Friday night. It was my first time to shoot at Gilley's Dallas. The lighting was not to bad. I can see it will be next to impossible to shoot when they have a big crowd as there is no pit.
Here are the images in no specific order.

Awesome pics! Did you use a 70-200 L IS lens?

Yes, you can look in the EXIF data and it will tell you. I did a few with my 24-70mmL f/2.8 as well.

Well, that's it ... you have the same equipment as me now and much more talent. Nice pictures.

Boy I don't know about the talent thing....I've still got a bunch of work to catch up on the equipment list.
I really coulda used the 400mm f/2.8 at this venue. The light/sound board is quite the distance from the stage.

That was my favorite shot of the night....the problem is I saw it about 1 second late and was not able to focus and get it as sharp as it should be.

7 is the favorite of mine.

why would this be next to impossible? it pretty much describes every single gig i shoot.

Thanks narlus, it was tough to capture this guy as he spent most of the time in the wings where the light was very low. They did a traditional fiddle tune where he tore it up but he moved all over the stage.

Not sure what you mean by the lighting being a bit flat.
Some of the ones I chose to post did not have the spots on the performers but I liked them better due to expression or the capture. 1, 2 4 and 8 seem to be lit pretty well.
Thanks

Almost no backlight. I always like a spot from the back giving a light 'rim'
