View Full Version : Linear Sharpen For Dumbies?

I am new to this Linear Sharpen approach to process images. I normally shoot in Large/Fine JPG mode.

Experiments with LinearSharpen(various versions), using 16-bit linear TIFF files converted using BreezeBrowser, have not achieved the results I had hoped for. I was expecting a "better" final result than what I am currently getting by shooting in JPG format and doing general sharpening with USM (better sharpening, less noise, accurate colors, etc.).

Here's the question: Is there a "LinearSharpen For Dumbies" write-up somewhere that covers how one should set up Photoshop (including Color Settings), and the proper use of LS to achieve best results? Something for the LS and RAW format "Newbie"?

Thanks,
Terry

This forum mostly deducated to this purpose.
Convert as linear 16 bit Tiff not just 16 bit Tiff.
Then apply any convert+sharpening action of
Pekka's LinearSharpen set for Photoshop.
My opinion - use Pekka's action and BreezeBrowser.
Fred's action is OK but Pekka's one is much better.
Moreover this action is permanently developing
which is very interesting and makes one to think
of doing similar stuff by himself - that is good.
Dont hesitate to ask questions - people here
would answer you ASAP with great usefullness.

Terry,

This forum has addressed linear tiff conversion for some time now but is not dedicated to it. It just seems to be the "Hot Topic" today. This forum is dedicated to helping YOU get the very best from your Canon camera with the help of the willing members. For many, that is linear. Many more (they remain silent but follow every post) may be exactly where you are now. As sudaplatov said, "Dont hesitate to ask questions - people here would answer you ASAP with great usefullness."

Well said. Don't feel that your super fine jpg is inferior. You paid a lot for this fine camera and it will produce superb images without complicated post processing. Decide what works best for you and contrate on taking superb pictures.:)
