View Full Version : Pekka: I still prefer LS 3.09 over 3.42

Pekka,

Just tried 3.42. I still think 3.09 gives me the best colors. 3.42 and 3.12 give a greenish cast to the image. 3.09 is closer to reality and more pleasing. Colors may be slightly oversaturated and just require slight desaturation in PS. Otherwise it is perfect.

Why do I get this problem with 3.42?

In technical terms 3.42 can not have any color cast - if you feed it pure gray it will come back as pure gray.

3.09 had good conversion but it had the problem of clipping colors (esp. red and magenta) which led me to 3.42 type conversion. Add saturation +15 to 342 and you might like it better.

About the color cast, only things I can think to explain it is that
- your monitor has a color cast
- you display adapter control panel has a uneven gamma setting
- you use some ICC on you monitor driver or PS which is not working correctly.
- what I see on my monitor (4 years old Eizo F78) is not correct and there is indeed a green cast.
- you compare the conversion to canon conversion. Canon conversion makes all blues very off - sky and water is always same tint dark muddy blue and, this is because the conversion tints cyan to more blue shade than it should be. This is also source of the teal color problem with D30 original conversion.

Just for curiosity, after 342 conversion, open channel mixer and select the blue ouput channel on that dialog. Now, raise that blue slider gradually until the green cast you see is gone. Tell me what value you had on blue slider.

Pekka,

The green cast is gone at about 106% on the blue slider.

Aside from clipping of reds and magenta in 3.09, what advantages does 3.42 have over 3.09?

Thanks.

I will have to disagree that 3.09 was better. 3.42 is brilliant!!!!!! I was getting an oversaturated yellow cast on tanned human skin under incandescent light under version 3.12. This one is really close. The only time I am using non linear now is on problem skin tones. I have a good 19" monitor displaying 1200x1600, 85hz, 32bit and calibrated with the colorvision spyder...my monitor doesn't lie!

Thanks for a job well done.

P.S. I have an S30 for skiing and cycling, any hope of a tweaked version for that line? I'm almost ashamed to ask. :-)

Peeka,
I couldn't find a definition for Aftershave 3 in the new 3.42 version. What is this color mixer supposed to accomplish?

Matterhorn,

If you check the web page http://photography-on-the.net/D30/linear/ for 3.42 you find that Pekka describes aftershave 3:

"Use this for converted and sharpened photos. Adds cyan which means brigher sky blue and green. Shifts red to magenta if used too many times. Id you use this only once on portraits it enchances the skintone to a bit more tanny look"

I have tried on some of my people pix, and it often makes an improvement.
