Basically, i have next to no money and want a flash. I am looking for the best balance between price and power, and am wondering which flash you all recommend.

Please quantify "next to no money". What can you afford to spend?

Also tell us what camera you plan to hang it on, and the kinds of photography you want to use it for.

Sorry for not including all the info, i have a bad habit of doing that.

Anywase, I have about 200USD to spend on a flash, maybe more if I can wing it.

It is going on a 350D, and I plan to use it for general photography, however probably mainly portraits and all performing arts.

Why not save for a bit longer and get a 580EX? :)

well then with that amount you can get a 220EX but save some more and get a 430EX much better tilt and pan. But the 220EX is still better than onboard flash

Why not save for a bit longer and get a 580EX?The answer to that is because it's overkill for anyone who does not use their flash professionally on a regular basis. If a Chevy can get you to work, you don't need a Mercedes.

The somewhat good news is that the Sigma EF-500 DG Super is $200 plus shipping from http://sigma4less.com

The somewhat bad news is that most of the flash units priced significantly less than that are only marginally better than the built-in flash. So it would be better to wait until you can afford the aforementioned unit or possibly a 430EX, rather than spending your hard earned money on something with lackluster capabilities.

You might also consider a used 420EX, 430EX or 550EX.

I've been using a 420EX for a few years and so far have never required more power. I'm not a pro, so I only use my flash for family events, outdoor fill and the occassional school concert. Using it correctly, it has always given me the results I need.

If you mainly need flash for family gatherings, even a 220EX would probably do just fine. However, why not just calculate the guide number you'll need and buy the flash that meets this power requirement? From what you described my bet is that a used 420EX or a new Sigma EF-500 DG Super would work well.

IMO, you really have only 2 choices. The aforementioned Sigma EF DG Super for $200 or the non-Super version for about $65 less.

The Super has been likened by many to the 430EX and the non-Super has similar credentials without manual control and slave operation. They both offer tilt and twist and to my mind are a much better value for a non-pro, although less powerful than the overpriced Canons.

Good luck

But it sure is more fun, no? ;)
