Today I tested the Elinchrom Skyport RX set.
THIS IS NOT A FINAL RELEASE product (or so I'm told).
The units are packaged in a very nice carton box with a clear manual.
The units are wonderful small and fit nicely on the camera and in the RX flash system, small attenas are used for getting better reach, although in my studio even with the antennas close down to the units I got a 100% hit rate.
I have used a tristar set for the last year or two and most of the time this gave me very good results, but sometimes it would loose a flash, so I started using 2 sets, meaning I could trigger two flashes, if one would not be triggered it would be via the second flash (optical slave options).
With skyport I have tested one set and during the whole day, even with the most extreme positions in my studio I got a 100% hit rate :D
One thing I could not value before I worked with the set was the remote control settings on the camera unit.
With this unit you can set the power of your RX strobes via the camera.
In other words if after metering you want to drop one of your lights 1/10th of an stop or more off course, just press the buttons on top of the transmitter and magically the strobe you have selected goes down.
Luckely this works VERY fast, I was very afraid you would be working longer than walking to the unit and making the adjustment, however this fear was not necessary, it works flawlessly.
I will receive my own sets probarbly in November but what I have seen now is VERY VERY impressive.
The big advantage is also that with the universal set you can trigger other brands than Elinchrom, off course you can't set the power of your units in this case (only RX).
Without a doubt, for the money a very good product.
If you don't want to loose any flash in the studio, or if you want more secure channels, the skyport system is superb.
Add.
There is also a version for connection to PC and MAC by USB. In this setup you can store and recall settings for the whole studio (RX) including accessories and other data.
I have not tested this version, but the software looks incredible.
Greetings,
Frank

Thanks for the review Frank, I think these will be pretty popular soon due to the show in Las Vegas. I know Im planning at looking at them very hard.

If these units have a good range with reliability, they are going to either significantly cut into Pocket Wizard sales, or Pocket Wizard will be offering up something for a lot less.

Enjoy! Lon

^ Agree. It's good news all round for everyone.

I've ordered a EL-Skyport Computer Remote/Trigger set for my Ranger RX setup. I'm just waiting on delivery, they are on back order. It seems Elinchrom are unable to keep up with the demand for these units.

I had a look at them today at a Photo trade fair. Range looked to be pretty good. The guy connected it to a Style FX 400 and run away with the trigger. After more than 50m it was still triggering every time :) Those things are really small by the way! :)

Hopefully this will encourage the PW people to release a lower cost, cross compatible product for studios. Most people don't need 1600' range in their own studios, so the PWs, while being the best, were prohibitively expensive.

If they will work with my Vivitar 285HV's and use the same cords I would gladly sell my pocketwizard plus II's for a set of three.

Are they going to be cheaper than pocket wizards?
How big is your studio? 100% hit withing 30 feet isn't much.
How big are the units themselves?

They are much cheaper than PWs. Operating range is 50m in studio and 120m outdoors. And by the way... 50 meters = 164 feet :)

My studio is rather large but not one radio trigger I used up untill now gave me the hit ratio the skyport gives me.

These 3 days I'm demoing for Elinchrom on the Pro imaging fair with of course also the Skyport and 2 RX units it works flawless where my WTF-E1 has died on me for RAW (too much interference) so I'm shooting JPEG / RAW for the first time in my life (that goes speedy enough).

Last year we had a less problem with interference and my radio triggers failed 1/25 shots, fairs are bad.

We have 2 groups setup at the moment (tommorow one more for testing) and it works flawless from the camera, I can use 1 flash or all and vary which one, also the settings of output is amazing.

A lot of people are really looking with big eyes of gread :D

Frank, is the Pro Imaging Fair accesable for everybody ? Or only for retailers and pro-photographers ?
The adress is Blokhoeve, Nieuwegein, right ?

Thanks

Sorry I'm just back and did not read this :(

It was accesable for everyone.
During the fair I did back to back workshops with the skyports and they failed me not once, we did a small test with app. 50mtrs distance in the building (which was very bad for signals, my wifi module kept below 24 mbs) and it still worked :D

I will receive the first samples for the studio (final versions) this next week.

Frank

Thanks Frank !

I did get into the fair ! :)

I was highly impressed by the Skyport system and enjoyed the demo !
Selecting several groups and adjusting power in a fly !

I learned a lot within a few minutes! ( how those elinchrom freezed the model's hair ...)
And what a lovely Octa box !!! :-)

Thanks !

I've been waiting for these things for quite some time. I'm hoping the US debut is around the corner. If they do what they do flawlessly, I think PocketWizards will have to change some things.

Skyports are about half the price of the pocket wizards. A universal set is running like $150 (for a trans & receiver). Thats hard to beat, not considering the remote control of power settings and many other things. These are here to stay.

I'm saving up for a set of those rather than the el-cheapos you can get on e-bay or other places. Will match my lights too.

That will get them to work with a Caonon 580EX?

What will get them to work ???

You need a hotsync cable connection to let them operate with the 580EX one is not delivered with the package.
