I got my Canon 50mm 1.8 II on Thrusday and over the weekend thought I would do a little test. I sat my daughter down and set the camera up on a tripod, took the 18-55 that came with the camera, went to about 50mm and snapped a shot, switched to the Canon 50mm without moving the camera and took another shot. I was shocked how much sharper the 50mm was on the exact same settings.
Is there anyone out there that has both the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and the Canon 50mm 1.8 that can compare the sharpness of these two lenses?
Thanks!
Jason

On the topic of lenses, I was comparing the following lenses (including the one that Sigma MrKickalot was wondering about.
-Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L vs Sigma 17-35 f/2.8-4.0 EX
-Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4 vs Sigma 20-40mm f/2.8
I was doing some lens comparisons my self with my existing lenses, all of which were the lenses I used with my Rebel 2000 and noticed a distinct lack of sharpness with the Rebel 2000 kit (I think it's a 28-90mm... don't have it in front of me), the same goes with the Sigma 70-210 lens that I have.
I'm hoping to find a "normal" zoom lens for my 10D that I can actually afford...

Onw of the Canon 50mm primes will be sharper than any of the Zooms, L or no L.

I have both the canon 50mm II 1.8 and the Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX APO. I have not had a chance to compare the sharpness between the two... But for me they are both good lens.
For Sigma samples try a couple of my albumns:

I did an allmost identical test with the same results. That 50/1.8 sure is a good 'reference' lens.
Maybe we should make it compulsory for any lens test to include the 50? :P

I don't have the 18-55mm lens but have no doubt that any primes of that range will out perform this lens.
It's a bit unfair to compare the 50mm with 70-200mm lens. But certainly, you want quality. CDS has done a comparison of Canon 70-200L with Sigma one here:
