Mid-life career change

Has anyone or does anyone know of someone that successfully made the switch from the corporate business/technology world to that of a professional freelance photographer?

Changing to Freelance photographer ??

May seem glamorous but you had better research your field and the opportunities in your area of choice first.
It can be done, of course, but the odds are against you succeeding unless you have special skills in special areas and/or very good contacts.
