I have an XTi with kit lens, and only have been shooting for about a month. I took this today and im not quite sure how i feel about it. I really wish the tree wasn't growing out of the baby's head.lol But just looking for some C&C.

I like it...have to admit a lot of people have been abusing the selective coloring but on this picture i find it works well with the flowers..
Nice pic

Personally, the color in the flowers draws my eyes away from the main subject - the kids!

I'm pretty neutral about selective color. I've seen some that come out really nice-- even artful-- but in this case I think the selective color on the flowers detracts from the image. The bright saturated yellow color has a tendency to pull the viewer toward it, which in this case is away from the obvious subject. It creates for me a negative space in the subject area, which is generally a no-no, unless the subject is supposed to be a silhouette.
What was the image like before the processing?

you are definitly right. it does take away from the subject now that you mention it.
unfortunately after pp i clicked save instead of save as, so i lost the original.lol

I have to agree.
The selective colouring draws too much attention in this shot, almost to the extent that you don't see the kids, they almost feel secondary.

I agree with the colouring... if you're going to use in this shot, then use it on the kids.

If you lost the original, you can always just completely desaturate it. I feel that in this case, that works better for the image the selective desaturation.

I think a complete desaturate would work too..
You know this is an issue of taste or opinion rather than any concrete criticism.
I honestly do like the flowers and although the initial focus could be on the flowers it really does complement the kids...
But I tend to like hidden meanings and messages in my pictures..
so in a situation like this, I think the most important thing is how it looks to you and what you like.
Critique is great and we learn, but don't let it sway your genuine taste

I like doing this to some of my shots.
The kids look out of focus to me.

put kids in color. Are they not the subject matter?

yes they were intended to be the subject matter.

They have great faces and are very photogenic. Who needs flowers when you have great kids
