For weeks during Winter break, I was constantly jeleous
as I looked at all those other fine deer shoots folks put up.
Well I finally got some:

Now, it this does not give me grounds for that Sigma 50-500, I don't know what would... (although that bald eagle....)
Well, my birthday is only 5 months off...

How close to the red-nosed deer (1st photo) were you able to get before he spotted you and took off on you?

That's a nice shot you got there.
I have no hope what-so-ever of getting a shot of a deer. Don't get me wrong, we have lots of them around here. Los Padres National Forest is practically my back yard.
Problem is that my photographic assistant can't keep quiet. Saw a group of about seven deer at our local Botanical Park a few months ago. No sooner did I say "ssshhhh, honey! Look, deer!" when she began running towards them yelling "hi! Hi, deer! Let me pet you!"
Two lessons here:
1. Don't bring a three-year-old when you want to shoot quiet things.
2. If you do have to bring the three-year-old, don't tell them to be quiet.

Sorry about your... ah, load equipment hauler!
I promise you it will get better... soon they will be in school... then old enough to be sold into slavery for more camera gear $$$! (opps, that's just a dream... Damn!)
I think I drove through that forest area too... I'm up in Sacramento working a long-term project, but drove home thru Vegas/hoover dam/ big hole in Arizona...
Anyhow, now I'm back in Calf., and seriously considering Yosemite this 3-day weekend... Not a lot of deer, but lions & tigers & bears!
