I carry a flash (420) but rarely use it. I am an outdoor man and even the indoor stuff like plays it's no flash

I did a local group last night and the audience lighting was brighter than on stage. The where doing a freebie practice session. So Having got some poor shots I checked OK with flash and tried my hand.. All using 1dmkII and sigma 70-200

The response by the group on a local MB is

Those are just sooooooooo obviosly photos taken by someone who knows how to take photos.
D`y know I`d pay you to come to concerts and take that stuff. After you`d watched us a few times and knew what we did when, I think you could freeze some of the moments which flash by so fleetingly unnoticed.

I aint as impressed as he is as I was kinda winging it with the flash...in fact i was embarressed to read it... but now offering to pay :) I guess I need to learn about flash or just keep to sport ..

Why ISO 100; f/4? Even if I absolutely *have* to use flash, I'll likely use ISO 1600 or 3200 and allow as much ambient as possible to get in....
These are way to 'flashey' for me. Did you take any without flash?

It would be nice if your title gave the band name and venue. As for the flash, could you bounce it? Even off yourself? Wear a white shirt. Bounce off your girl in a white shirt? Off camera cord? Off camera cord and bounce? :-) Hmmm, I may have to start with the copyright across the middle of my pictures. :-)

I took some without flash. The lighting was so poor in a badly lit room they where terrible. first few here http://hyndburn.fotopic.net/c1120675.html

I had a feeling I was too far away to bounce as theres a dance floor between artist and me... I went to side and got closer but not good..

I use fotopic for storage of pics.. Once i set copyright on one it goes on all collections.. some need it more than others.. these probably don't but taking it off takes it off all other pics/collections

I dont understand the concept of going to iso 1600 when you have the light (flash) and shutter speed which stopped at 250 and wouldn't go higher

There is a large body of explanation about Canon flash usage over in the Equipment Talk section so if you are going to pursue this type of photography you might want to skulked around over there, but just so you know, with that body and a 580EX (the only one I am familar with) you can get shutter speeds significantly faster than 1/250th using HSS. This is precisely why you need to research in the other forums ... you need to know about this stuff. :-)

I wish there where more hours in the day :(

Yeagh I got the flash when I had 10d as first body and it sufficed. When you get a better body you need better lens, flash etc to keep up.. 250 seemed OK and I did notice changing the iso didn't seem to effect speed as much as it does without flash. I shall have a ganders at equipment talk ... Thanks :)
