Question???

im a huge concert goer. a also recently took up photography and constantly notice the photographers on the otherside of the barricade. i don't see badges or credentials hanging from thier necks or anything, but security allows them to be there. i'm waiting for the chance to strike up a conversation, but until then can anyone tell me who they are? who employs them? it dont appear they work for a particular band. can anyone answer my question? thanx

How about telling us the location, venue and bands involved. The situations vary hugely depending on the level and type of concert.

for instance, last night i went to see a popular hard rock band, Godsmack. Supporting bands were Breaking Benjamin and another unknown local band. the show was held at the CSU convocation center. this show had multiple photographers there.

Another show was at the House of Blues in Cleveland, headliner, Violent Femmes. or even another, Counting Crows at the Nautica Stage in Cleveland. does that help?

Hey there

At big gigs (generally ones where there is lots of security, barriers etc) you will probably need a photo pass/credentials. These can be obtained from a variety of sources - band management, pr people, promoters, the band themselves, sometimes the venue, the list goes on!

If its just a small venue often they will just let you take your camera in but then you may find no photographiers pit and you are in there with the audience. If you don't have much experience shooting then why not go down to a local smaller venue and just have a go, no pressure. Thats how I started or else try to contact a local band if you know of any. There is probably a huge local music scene in your area (there is one in every town) that many people just don't know exists, check it out and get involved you will love it!
