The Canon 550EX works fine with all Canon EOS cameras.

I use the 550 and the 420. If you don't need manual flash control, or wireless ETTL with multple flashes or a Guide Number of 55, you could do just fine with the 420EX. If you have the extra cash go for it.

I also have a 550 as well as a 420 - and also an ST E2 Speedlite transmitter, and I agree with Scott: in most ways, the 420 is as useful as the 550.

Is it as "brite"

The 550EX has a GN of 55M , which means at ISO 100 f/1.0 it will travel 55M. The 420EX has a GN of 42M. So their maximum distances are different by 13M. However, as long as you stay within the distance limits of the 420, it will be as bright.

Distance(m,f) = Guide Number(m/f) / f stop
m=meters f=feet

That's how I spend too much of my money too! :D

As do I; I can also find some way to justify getting the more expensive option!

If you want expensive, consider Metz flashes.

Many consider them superior.

Particularly Metz 54-3.
