Canon S3 IS - How to see the focus setting?

With the Canon S3 IS, does anyone know an easy way to see what distance the auto-focus (or locked AFL) set itself to ?

I know I can press MF and see it after using auto-focus but that's very clumbsy and turns the MF on.
