I use a 135-400 f4.5-5.6 Sigma lens which I like but I also have a Sigma 70-210f2.8 which I LOVE.
I want to buy the new 80-400OS version when it comes out, but in the meantime I want to sell the 135-400 and use a 2x convertor on the 70-210f2.8.
According to the sales person (which I hold in good knowledge) the results with a GOOD convertor on the f2.8 will be better (sharper) on the full end (full zoom) than the 135-400 lens.
Now I have the choice between a Sigma EX or the Tamron.
Both are reviewed rather well, my feeling tells me to go with the Sigma to be sure I have no problems with the OS lens in the future, but some people say the Tamron is better optical.....
I know a 1.4x is better but I need the extra reach for birds.

Frank

Is Kenko any good ?
Better than the Sigma's ?
I know there are :
Canon's (no go with my lenses)
Sigma EX (heard good things about it)
Tamron (heard good things about it)
Kenko (don't know it)
Solligor (used one a while ago and I was not that pleased)

I've been using one Kenko 1.4 teleconverter on my film and digital cameras since 1997. That is with about five Canon lenses and one Sigma lens.

Well after ordering my Sigma 80-400 OS yesterday I decided to go for the 1.4 Sigma EX convertor. With the 2x I would loose my focus on that one.
I did some testing with my 70-210f2.8 APO and although the weather is terrible I can't see any real worsening of the picture quality thank God.
Maybe I will buy a 2x in the future.

The 1.4X Sigma converter is VERY good,. even on Canon lenses, but obviously on Sigma lenses it is actually the best choice.
The Sigma 2X is a bit less of a performer,. so you made the right choice with the 1.4X
So,. you are going to be the first kid on the block with Sigma 80-400!!!
Can't wait to hear what you think! :)

I orderd from B+H they had it on stock, and I choose the 3-5 Day delivery option so I hope next weekend, but I think it will take a bit longer.
I have confidence in the lens don't ask me why ;D.
The lens retails here in Europe for € 1300,00 - € 1600,00. I paid € 950,00 including filter and shipping so that's a bit cheaper ;D.

Are you sure the 80-400 will take the Sigma TC, or any protruding TC? It looks too shallow at the back of the lens. Also, the 80-400 does not appear on the TC compatibility list.
Just a thought....

Hi,
It's not on the list because it's not on any list I think ??
It should be no problem, the 1.4x convertor has the same connection as the Canon itself so if it would not fit that would be a very strange occurance (I hope).
I will know soon, I ordered the 80-400OS and hope to have it somewhere in the next 2 weeks.

Now to find a 2X tc that can keep up with the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 EX lens that I have!
