50mm 1.8

I would have recommended you get it with the kit lens, but the kit lens is not worth it if bought separately.

So I will go with the 50/1.8 also. Very nice lens at low cost.

With out knowing what you will be shooting it is very difficult to make any better recommendations. But for general purpose if you want a good zoom then aim for maybe the 24-105mm lens. or something near there. I usually keep a 28-70 or 70-200 on my camera, but those are a bit pricey.

Go with the kit lens, and see what focal lengths you work with most.
And also get the 50 1.8 as the others mentioned, it is a great lens for the price.

When you get more expirience, you will know which lens to dump your money into, instead of getting a nice one at first, and it not fitting your style.

Start with the kit lens (18-55) which you should be able to get for about $60 on one of the forums or eBay. After using it for a while & getting a feel for what focal range best suits your needs, buy the best lens you can afford in that range. Start saving now :D

I have a lens for sale. It's not the fastest lens on the planet but I was happy with the results until I upgraded. It's a Tamron 28-200 XR Di. I bought it in April/May of this year for the purpose of taking it on a cruise this past June.

If that auction goes higher than 140, here is another one in the sell forum...

That's the old MkI version, and the current bid is significantly higher than a MkII version would cost you new. Is there something about the MkI that makes it worth more? I'm not familiar with this lens.

Based on the current bid I saw, overpriced by $40 at least.

I recommend just getting a new 50/1.8 for $70 from BH, even with shipping it would be lower cost. I just bought one for a friend from a camera store (Penn Camera) for $82 which included sales taxes.

Just my opinion,

how about a tamron the 28-75 f2.8 is lovely and you won't be looking at replacing it for awhile.. if you like the focal length of the kit the 17-50f2.8 is one of my favorites.. ofcourse you should pick up a nifty.. great buy and you will love it..

You can get this new for about $350, and I believe I saw one listed on the "Sell" forum yesterday. Also, I'd recommend the Canon 17-85 IS. Slower than the Tamron, not as well regarded, but a serviceable, versatile lens nonetheless. I believe surfologist listed one for sale in his signature.

Id like to spend around 100-200, so i guess im either going to get a Canon 50mm 1.8, or something used around that price, any idea? I like to shoot cars, buildings, and some macro if that helps.

Besides the kit lens, I know of no lens that falls in that price range and is fairly versatile. The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 may come closest, but if not wide enough, you can buy the Tamron 17-50 for about the same price. Does not work on full frame bodies, in case you ever want to buy one.

I agree with Peterdoomen regarding the 18-55. However, if you are coming from a P&S with a fairly long zoom range (6X or so), then it probably covered medium-wide to medium-tele in 35mm terms (20-some to 140-some), and the 18-55 will not fill that bill. In fact, you'd probably have to look at one of the consumer "super" zooms. I think Tamron has a 28-200 or something like that, but I'm not sure of the cost. Even then, you'll be somewhat long at the wide end.

Also, if you're accustomed to a zoom, I wouldn't recommend getting only the 50mm lens. I believe you'll find it too limiting.

I agree with Steve. I started with the Tamron 28-300 and it served me well as a good all-a-rounder although like many have said you will want to go wider eventually. Either the 28-200 or 28-300 is quite capable in good light.

Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 17-70. Those are two that are generally recommended to replace the kit lens. The Tamron, though shorter in range, has the edge given it's constant f/2.8 maximum aperture.

I own the Tamron 28-75 and it has proven to be a very good lens - sharp, great color, adequate focus speed. It does allow close focusing of 13", even at the long end and offers about a 1:4 magnification. So you can use it for close-up photography, but not true macro.

Oh, by the way, the Tamron sells for $349 new, after $30 rebate, at B&H.
