I had the pleasure of going to a Sikh wedding this weekend. It was a little intimidating at first, not being familiar with their traditions, but I love learning and participating with other cultures. That's one thing that makes living in Canada so fun. The openess of cultures to share their traditions with each other.

I took my camera along to get some shots of the event, and to practice with my flash (just got it 2 weeks ago). I didn't shoot a ton because I didn't want to offend the professional photographer that was hired to cover the wedding. However I did manage to come get a couple of shots I really liked. Here are two of my favorites.

BTW, the food after the ceremony was sooooo good. I love East Indian food, and this food was excellent.

I have a coupe more shots, but I haven't processed them yet.

Wow, what a contrast between the lively colors of the woman and the conservative suites of the men. Beautiful photos, thanks for sharing.

Good capture. :)
The first one really stands out where the child is the only one looking at the camera. Also, the different colours makes it interesting.

Thanks for the comments, glad you guys liked it. How did I do in regards to flash usage? Both shots are direct flash (not bounced). I set to ISO400 or ISO800 depending on the ambient, and was shooting <M>anual, I was paying attention to the metering on the camera to keep the non-flash exposure within -2 stops. Flash was set to ETTL, and I would change the FEC when I felt the shot might need more light. It seems as I've read that often I'm using +1 FEC up to +1 2/3 FEC.

Other than that I just put my camera on Info preview and was constantly checking my histograms to make sure I was exposing to the right as much as possible without blowing out the photo.

excellent shots looks like your getting the hang of the flash already..only one thing that looks strange/out of place is the men eating out of plastic trays?..looks strange in such a formal traditional wedding.

Thanks :)

Yeah I thought it was a bit funny too. But the dinner was in the basement of the temple on the floor obviously (that's their tradition). The food was buffet style. I guess it's just easier to use platic trays. Plus with around 200 people there, who'd want to do dishes! :P I believe that temple is able to hold around 500 people. From what I've heard it's the same caterer that usually get the business from that temple too. I'd love to have a steady customer like that. ;)

Very nice shot - I liked the cultural composition of it. My wife is a Sikh - if you find a chance, make it to a Sikh "Bhangra" (folk-dance at harvest time) festival! they are crazy people. I liked this photo more because in a more and more divided world, you still have interest in other religions/cultures/etc.

Thanks Suvro, glad you enjoyed the post. I've heard about "Bhangra"s, they do sound like a lot of fun. I'll have to check one out and take my camera along. :)

Interesting shots of another culture's practices... I like the way you've posted one of the colours and one of the reserved dress.

What were the happy couple wearing?
