View Full Version : Which "D" is better?

I am thinking of purchasing the 30D in December. But some people have been telling me to buy the XTi or XT, but I would rather stick with one of the "D"s. I had read that the 20D was better in some ways than the 30D, and the 10D better than the 20D, except for the MP count. So which would be a good camera, the 30D, 20D, or 10D? This is my first DSLR buy, but i'm pretty familiar with all the settings of one since I have used them before in an internship i had this past summer, and I want to get one before i go off to college next year.

Matt, the 10D cannot use the EF-S lenses if you want to get into extreme wide-angle or even affordable wide-angle lenses.

The 30D is, of course, the newest of the bunch. That means it will be the highest price. Other than the larger LCD display on the back, there is nothing about the 30D that is urging me to upgrade from my 20D.

If there is any financial limitation to your purchase, the 20D should be your choice, in my opinion, because it is a great value today. I believe you can even find new 20D's still in stock in some places.

If you are not financially strapped, go for the 30D.

With the DR, 30D price is comparable to 20D these days. So if I were you, I would definitely go with 30D.

The XTi and XT are pretty much "D's". Just depends on which country your talking about :P

if it makes you feel better, the XTi and the XT are both "D" cameras.

I'd recommend the 30D. Larger LCD, spot metering, picture styles and, probably, since it's a newer model, much continuous improvement.

That's what I did. I upgraded from a 300D (first generation digital rebel) and I couldn't be happier with this camera. I took advantage of the double rebate so the camera will end up costing me $939.95.

I much prefer the more durable alloy body and the feel of this camera to the smaller XT/XTi. I also prefer the controls and layout on the 30D and spot metering is something I really want to play around with. Maybe this weekend! :D

Adorama has the 20D new for under a thousand dollars. The XT and XTi have a smaller, dimmer viewfinder than the 20D or 30D, this is important to me.

if you take advantage of double rebates (especially the 17-85 kit), 30d is the same price as the 20d, if not cheaper (17-85 kit 20d is about 50 bucks more than 30d kit)

The 30D is a full size, well balanced camera which makes the XT's look and feel like what they are - toys! ;)
The best thing for you to do is to go to your local camera store and see which are comfortable to you.

The XT is a small, well balanced camera which makes the 30D look and feel like like what they are - bricks! ;)

Ok...Ok.. no flames... :) :)

But I agree, go to the store and play with both. Functionally they are nearly equal as is the quality of the photo.

not flaming
just disagreeing
the xt felt too small, and flimsy to me
it didnt feel like a "real" camera to me

the 30/20d feels great in my hands
i wouldnt get anything but the 30
it is an amazing camera that feels great and preferms great

but glass, is also an important part
so plan for that in your funds

The difference between 20D & 30D is not just larger LCD. Spot metering is one factor made a lot of people make the switch.

X is very different from D, both have few common things namely Name, both are Canon. Both are excellent picture taking machine. You simply won't go wrong by going for either of them. I always was thinking which one would make a Photojournalist a happier camera man, for eg. in Iraq. XT that due to smaller size make the guy run faster and farther (In theory) or heavier weight D20/D5 that makes it a potential weapon to be thrown for good impact, should everything else fails.... Bottom line no matter how you look at them even at most stupid arguments, always you find one feature unique to one. You are the one that should make which features are for you, so doing your homework well will pay you back in terms of final happiness and comfort.

BTW don't forget that operational ergonomic are very different on XTs as oppose to Ds so for eg if you are a professional with chances to upgrade to 5D/1D in future, you definitely need to get 30D and not XTi. I have a XT and 30D God it kills me sometimes to remember how to shift ISO up or down or to make F stop smaller / larger when the 2 bodies are switched quickly.

One thing makes XTi very unique at the current time is the auto sensor cleaning both software and hardware but unfortunately I am hearing expected bad stories and as I do not own one, I can not be the judge here.

I debated the same questions. With the double rebates, I thought the decision for a 30D was a no brainer. I've had it a week, and I have absolutely no regrets.

I couldn't wait for the rebates; perhaps just as well:

Get the best you can afford. The 30D is a great, full-featured camera that will serve you for a long time without an upgrade.

Def 30D

If I were to start out and these were on the market.

Xti sounds nice with more MP's...............

But 5 fps..................and a pentaprism instead of mirror.

Bigger screen, iso in viewfinder, spotmetering..............

Just do it!

Just as a btw, I'm pretty certain that almost all working photojournalists in Iraq today are carrying a variation on the 1 series. I would, if I was a professional war-journalist.

I'd go with the 30D almost the same price as the 20D and you'll love the huge viewfinder, I know I do.;)

Depending on the puiblication and your status with them, they might be supplying you with the equipment, so if its Canon, its going to be a 1 series. Nikon, it'll likely be a D2H or D2X.

The 30D viewfinder isn't any bigger than that of the 20D or the Rebel series; however it's slightly brighter than the Rebel viewfinder because of the pentaprism.
I'd probably say the cost different between the 20D and the 30D isn't worth it if the rebates weren't around and if I hadn't switched myself a few months ago. I really like the 1/3 stop ISO (and in the viewfinder when changing), Picture Styles, larger screen, and spot meter.

Also has a bigger buffer(30D).

I had read that the 20D was better in some ways than the 30D, and the 10D better than the 20D, except for the MP count.

I have not heard about that.

The only respect in which the older model is better than the newer one, obviously, is a cheaper used price which makes it more affordable for you.

Other than that, the 20D was significantly better than the 10D (speed, megapixels, ISO performance, AF) and the 30D was marginally better than the 20D (larger display, spot metering, larger buffer).

Best regards,
Andy

OK guys and gails I think I got it finally.
A is better than B that is surely better than C and D.
F is for you if you still insist on X.
