Well, I can honestly say this was an accident - the image was taken in colour and converted to B&W using the channel mixer, the cut and pasted onto a white background, and using the history brush set to lighten, 50% opacity and about 50% flow to remove some of the shadow and the stalk.
C&C welcomed.

I like it very much. If you added a stroke accent line, inside the outside edge, in a nice grey tone it would look even more terrific.

You go to Select>select all, then Edit>stroke, choose your colour and position of the stroke, then hit OK. If the stroke is going to show within your picture frame, it's a good idea to zoom in to about 200% and fix the corners with a 1pixel paint brush too, otherwise they look a little soft, as there is a pixel space in each corner.

She was mostly correct. What I mentioned doing would need you to: add a new transparent layer. Then you select a color / shade from your subject layer. Click on your transparent layer and select the rectangular marquee tool. Draw a rectangle. Now click Edit > Stroke > and pick how many pixels & usually as inside mode. (Most of the images I work on here get only one pixel of stroke)

You can also do the same thing to the outside of the background layer.
