Spent most of Sunday just gone in a local hide, it was a bit of a grey overcast day but managed to get a few decent shots, this is one of them. Met fellow forum member ColinRadford down there, not sure if he got any decent shots as I left before him. No doubt that a 'insert any rare bird here' appeared just after I'd left :D
30D, Canon 300mm f/2.8 & 2x extender @ f/5.6 (very impressed with this setup!)

Yours is a very nice capture, I had the Canon 2X TC but was not please with results. The image quality would not stand up under cropping.

You didn't miss anything, it stayed pretty quiet after you left! There was a Water Rail and a Little Grebe at the Vale Pond at lunchtime today. Both new sightings for me, but a little too far away for my 70-200!

Nice almost desaturated look to this image with a great pose and nicely framed by the water.

Very elegant pose. I like the monochromatic look to the shot.

I shoot the same all the time.. (or since i bought the lens) I always use extenders...Goto love this combo... Try this combo with the 1 series. You still have all 45 AF points..

A great shot Paul. The pose is indeed good and though grey skies you have a nice reflection to go with it.

You know you're gonna have to get that longer lens in the end ;) The missus is working again this Sunday so no doubt I'll be back down there, maybe see you there.

Oh please don't tempt me! :)

It's a permanent hide built & owned by our local birding society.
Thanks to everyone else for your kind comments.

I ordered a 300mm F4 L IS this morning.....hopefully it will be here by the weekend! Not quite as good as that howitzer you've got strapped to the front of your camera but it is 1/3 of the cost! I should be be out and about on Sunday as far as I know.

Hey that's fantastic news, you're gonna love that lens! If you want to see some shots from the 300 f/4L IS have a look at my website, all the Australian bird section was taken with that lens, as were the 2 reptile shots and the 3 macro shots. I really have to get busy and upload some more!
Anyway looking forward to seeing your new toy hopefully at the weekend.
