Collin, haha, thank you! I don't use a remote, I just use the 10-sec timer. I should invest in a remote..it would save me serious time. Pre-focusing..10 second timer..tick tock.. time is money, baby! Hit me up anytime for tips! I'd recommend reading strobist.com. P.s. this lens rocks! My next lens will be the 70-200 for when I'm shooting other people. !GASP!

The quality of your work is very good obviously but can't quite figure out why the only photo's you seem to shoot are of yourself. Seems kinda strange but maybe that's just me.

It's a project called 365 days I'm taking 1 self portrait every day for a year. I'm not self centered, and before this project the camera scared me when I wasn't behind it.

You've got a great 365 going!
Off topic but here's a good cheap remote:

Plus 3 of these:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5157
Gives you about 18ft of remote shutter release cable for $10 shipped. I've also got the Canon $60 (RS-80N3) remote cable but bought this cheap one to splice the extensions in. It works great.
You're going to love the 70-200!

No problems! I've actually been following your work for a little while now, but I decided to keep a low profile. After exams are over, I'm gonna try and pull one of these myself. Everyone always says I take too many pictures of everything except for myself! Well, this is a perfect chance for me to exercise my creative skills and involve my own ugly mug in the process.

Are you using just one flash or more? I've got a 580EX and a 430EX but I'm considering selling the 430EX. :D I love the lighting and creativity in your series. I'd be pretty damn happy if I could pull off something like that.

how does she do this?

Tripod, take 4 exposure with subject in different, non-overlapping positions, and then blend the frames together in PS.

I cant find the blending tool! All i found was the Photomerge and that doesn't work! can some one please tell me where is this tool at?

When sheawyatt said 'blend', he/she didn't mean there's a special tool which you just click and the magic happens. Unfortunately it's not as easy as that. The word 'blending' just meant you connect it all together in PS.

The usual method is to load all four exposures as separate layers and use layer masks. To make it look natural, you have to keep the lighting and background consistent. So that means shooting the exposures in Manual and on a tripod.

Eric,

They're long exposures. I rested the camera on something sturdy (didn't have a tripod handy) and used a remote to trigger the shutter. I kept the ISO to 100 to keep the noise low and waited for the camera to take the photo.

The final image is a blend of 2 different exposures - a long exposure and a very long exposure.

Yeah, for sure. It looks like a heck of alot of fun. I think I might do a '52 weeks' thing instead though.. not sure if anyone can take my ugly mug every day of the year.

Are you using one flash or both of them? Once my exams are over I might go do some real research on strobist. It seems like you've made alot of stuff yourself (softboxes and such). I'm selling a few lenses so I'll be getting some extra cash. I wonder if an umbrella and a stand for my 580EX would do the trick.

That's very nice. It almost has a cinematic feel to it thanks to the top-and-bottom borders. Handheld? I find I can often handhold to almost half a second at 17mm when braced - what a low-light killer this lens is.

Third shot is nice too, although I'd probably do a little burning in CS3 for the complex in the distance.. it looks a little overcooked.

First shot reminds me of the train station at the beginning of Half Life 2, although you probably have no idea what I'm talking about.

My tripod story sucks. I selected manfrotto, and my father in law insisted on giving it to me for christmas. So I ORDERED the legs for him and had them shipped to a local store. All he had to do was pick them up and pay for them. He understood how much they were going in, but still insisted.

Christmas comes along, and I open the box to find the cheapest set of legs manfrotto makes. He says "I went to get the ones you ordered, but the guy told me there was not difference between these, except for $100."

Hopefully, this year i just get a tie.

Really nice shots there grizzy! :D I love the glow in the 2nd one and the 5th shot is a great too!

It's a shame about the 17-55's flare characteristics .... but otherwise it's a superb lens and I'm very grateful to have one :)

ALaS, you truly do some amazing work.

I just wanted to throw these up here to show what this lens is capable of hand held at night. I went down to St. Augustine for their Nights Of Lights festival last night and came away with these. Shots were taken as slow as 1/5 second hand held and using only ambient lights (mostly lit by Christmas lights) while coming out relatively fine.

All decent lens have good re-sale value, especially the high end lens. You should make back at least 75% even with a small blemish on a lens like a scratch on the paint. As long as you haven't scratched the glass and the IS unit is fine, you'll make most of your purchase back.

Probably an illusion because they were sharpened at a larger size then resized for the web.

One thing I'd like to say about this lens:

I spent this week with a 50 f/1.4 mounted to my 30D. All I can say is how much I miss the IS! This lens is a gem. Being able to handhold 1/4th sec shutters is amazing. I get shake on anything less than 1/60th sec shutters on the 50 more than half the time. The keeper rate is great.

The only downsides are (for me): size, weight and build (I wish it was internal zoom). I guess you don't get the 1.4 effect, but hey, you get a lot more.

I recently shot at a museum where there was hardly any light at all. I couldn't have used any other lens to get the shots I did.

Here's an example:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3080/3166620758_9fe6f6dba0.jpg?v=0

Camera: Canon EOS 400D Digital
Exposure: 0.125 sec ( 1/8 )
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO Speed: 1600

Without IS, at that focal length on a crop body the guideline shutter speed is something like 1/80 of a second.

Focus was spot on every time as well.

Also, don't you think the mannequin looks a lot like Ricky Gervais? :)

Yeah, quite subjective, i like to have a bazooka in my hand !

Mine is coming soon and i'm really pleased it has the same size and weight than my 24-105L.

Hard to wait...

Speaking of bazookas, you should check out the 70-200 f/2.8 IS, or even the 100-400!

OK, 17-55 is not bazooka like 500L or such monsters but in transtandard zoom caterogy it is big already. I think 24-70L is just the bigger than 17-55 or 24-105L or tamron 17-50f2,8...

I feel more impressive my 24-105L than my 70-200f4L. Because 24-105L is more compact. When i switch from one to other, i really feel the 24-105L heavier (than 70-200) !!
