The only thing I dont understand is, why is this lens loosing the price so quickly.

Not counting the Canon instant rebates that expire on Jan. 17, 2009, the 17-55 is $70 less expensive than it was when I bought it around this time last year. I don't know what caused the price of this lens to drop when the cost of most other lenses seems to be rising.

Although the lower price will hurt my resale value, I am glad to see that it is more affordable - this will make it easier for new buyers to try the lens. At $929, the 17-55 is still somewhat overpriced. I do feel that the current $850 with instant rebate is just about what the lens is worth.

I just got this lens two days ago and these were two of the first images I took. In fact, I just got back into SLR's two days ago as well, purchasing a 40D :D. The whole low-light thing is new to me, but was one of the primary reasons I made this my first lens.

jwcdds

Shoot under similar conditions as before. The specks showed up last time because they were being reflected onto the filter. So shooting directly into bright light would generate lens flare, but in addition if the dust specks were still there, show their reflections.

Ironically, if you didn't have your UV filter on in the original photo, then you wouldn't have seen the dust specks. :D

I'll try it again to check if that dust is still there. I've been using the filter from day one on my lens.

Hi Dave, I didnt use any filters on camera, but I did use some Photoshop filters to give it a slight boost. I increased saturation and contrast slightly and gave the water a very slight colour correction to make it look whiter (it was reflecting the sky so had a slight tinge to it).

Shot in RAW mode which no doubt made the final editing easier.

I'm not really sure you can do a good one for $50. My philosophy has always been that, if I spend $1000 on a lens, I really want to put a really nice filter in front of it. A bad filter can make a $1000 lens look like $100 in no time flat.

With that said, I use B+W, but Heliopan and Hoya get great marks too. The nice thing about the 17-55 is that it shares the 77mm diameter with many of the L lenses, so you get a lot of utility out of the filter once you start collecting expensive glass! :)

hey thanks,

they were shot in raw and used light room to set the white balance and do some tonal adjustments, nothing crazy. also i used i think either acr 4.4 or camera landscape as the setting base in light room. since they were raw, and shot in Av mode, all in camera settings are not used at all.

i can post up the before and after some where if you wanna see the diff.

Yeah, that would be great. So far I have not been brave enough to shoot in RAW (and I also don't have Lightroom - just DPP and PS CS2), so this will be a good learning experience for me.

cyruz
12th of February 2009 (Thu), 00:35
yea no prob, here you go. when i started i shot only in jpeg. then i saw what some people on here are able to do and the colors they can push out from RAW files. when i was trying to make HDR stuff, which i still suck at i began to look at different programs for tone mapping and tonal adjustments. when i started i was using DPP and PSE 6. the results were good, but i wanted more tonal adjustment ability from the start while doing the raw file WB and conversions. I used the trial version of LR2 and god dam, so easy, incredibly short learning curve and here is the results of it.

the 1st is the raw image out of the camera. both are with the 17-55 lens and the B&W F-Pro circular polarizing lens filter. the 2nd will be the LR adjusted image.

thanks, by the way how do you like the 10-22? do you use it alot on walking around days or do you stick with the 17-55? im debating picking one up and if they release a new 24-70 with IS then ill definitely need wider.

10-22 is a bit of a specialised lens. I use my 17-55 as walkaround and bring out the 10-22 only when I need to go ultrawide. The 17-55 is faster and sharper, although the 10-22 has slightly warmer colours.

cyruz

i think thats actually my biggest complaint with the 17-55 ( except for the build quality compared to the L lens series) is the colors are kind of flat and not as warm with others in the same focal range/price range/IQ. but i guess they cant all be perfect. when ever i shoot with the 70-200, i get all happy and excited because i know the colors are going to be stunning, wish i had that with the 17-55 as well.

I love my 10-22 - when I walk in town, it is usually my walkaround. The 17-55 has become more of an environmental portrait lens for me lately.

With regards to colours, I honestly believe alot of that is just hearsay. As a previous owner of the 24-70L, I found it to have colours no better than the 17-55. As a crop owner, I would much rather have a 17-55 - 10-22 or no 10-22.

If you're a traveller or like to shoot natural and urban landscapes, I think you should do yourself a favour and have a go with the 10-22!

I love that boat shot!

I really loved my 17-55... but had to switch to the 24-70 since I upgraded from an xt to the 5D. The full frame is nice, but I haven't noticed too huge a difference between the two lenses... I do miss the IS too.

i find f/4 to f/5.6 is the sharpest, cant really tell which i think is the better apeture, but i know in that range your solid. its still pretty good at f/11. around f/16 u can see it starts to really gets noticably soft.

yup thats right. i have a less than a week old 17-55 and the color it produces is a bit dull. I have to up the contrast by 2 w/c i do not do in my 70-200 and sigma 30 1.4. the sharpness is also a bit weak under 2.8. This lens has too much rave in it. Aside from the great focal range range and IS, this is no better lens than the L counterpart. To people who say this is just hearsay, well i'll tell you now its not. And the dust issue is true as well in my copy. Doesn't affect image quality but pretty annoying considering the hefty price I paid for it.

I do believe your story and I speculate that there are two types of this lens (like some say Canon secretly tweaked the newer 100-400L's and made them sharper at longer focal lengths). I say this because my lens produces quite vivid colors straight from the camera, and is sharper than both my 100-400L and 100mm macro. As far as dust is concerned, I bought mine used, so it had SOME dust in it, but after using it, taking it to the beach, on hikes through woods, and laying in my felt lined bag, I haven't noticed any "new" dust.

I know you say that your lens is only a week old which goes to discredit my theory, but what other explanation is there to explain the good from the bad besides incredibly lax manufacturing standards (which I doubt is the case)

how i wish i have the same copy as yours. i was also thinking that perhaps this copy of mine is somewhat defective. Kinda hesitant to replace this w/ the same lens coz i might just get the same issue. freight cost is not cheap. That's why I pm'ed experienced user of this lens to solicit their opinion.

Believe it or not, it's this lens that's keeping me from going full frame. If canon comes out with a 24-70 2.8 IS, I'm plunging, but until then, I'm sticking with croppers.

71sbeetle

I hesitated for a long time between a 24-70 f/2.8 or 24-105 IS, I got the 24-105 and although it's not as wide and half as fast (f/4.0) I still love it, there were a few times I missed having f/2.8 but then I just doubled the ISO :p

I'm a horrendous pixel peeper and I try not to go above ISO 200, otherwise I consider that "too much grain". That's just me..and something I'm going to have to get over, but still, I love this lens.

I usually shoot at 100 ISO, with my 40D I usually wouldn't go past 1000 ISO, with my 50D I don't hesitate using up to 3200 ISO (yes, I think the ISO is better on the 50D than it was on the 40D)

anyway, this was shot at ISO 1000 with the 17-55

After 10 days of testing this lens, I've finally decided to return the lens for a replacement. 2 days later, a new one arrived at my doorstep. Between the prior copy and this new one, i would say that it is like night and day respectively. This copy is now sharp all the way to 2.8. Contrast also improved but still not up to the level of my 70-200. But I'm quite happy now! Thanks to picturecrazy for giving his time answering my queries. :)

First copy was very soft, especially at f/2.8.

Second copy was somewhat sharp (I thought it was very sharp at the time) but the colors looked very dull for some reason.

Third copy was softer (which reinforced me thinking copy #2 was sharp) and the focusing ring was very loose.

Fourth copy was very sharp but it was full of dust when new, I contacted Canon to send it in to have it cleaned but they told me to exchange it. So I told them this was my 4th copy and the guy said he was sorry but it would be easier to exchange it again.

Fifth and final copy was at least as sharp as the fourth, maybe even more, but what really caught my eye is how much more the colors popped ! It was very "tight" and felt just right. I kept it for a while and used it a lot, it didn't get any dust in it which I thought was cool (even though I knew by experience with my 17-85 and 100-400L that dust didn't affect IQ) and I just recently sold it here on POTN in my quest to upgrade to FF ! :)
