Thank you! I got lucky with the reflections, I didn't even notice them till after I took the shot and reviewed it. I was kinda in a hurry.

Shrug. B+W's MRC UV filter is just fine. Pricey, but fine. To tell you the truth, I'm not even using the MRC one, but I am using a B+W filter. I'm not losing any sleep over it.

well at lease you got the 50D. now i want the 50D if it wasn't 2x as much as the XSI. yet, i got the 17-55mm.
Another question, can anyone tell me what size is the filter for this one? my glass won't get here till end of the week. therefore in the mean time i want to get a UV filter for it and hopefully have it both come at the same time or shorten my wait for the filter. i saw one site that show 77mm then another showing me 67mm.

Hoya UV(0) HMC filter is good.
A good alternative to the 17-55 is the tamron 17-50. It's as sharp I'd not sharper an a hell of a lot easier to handle since it is much smaller than the 17-55.
The tammy 28-75 isn't a bad lens either though.

I'll agree hands down that the IQ is as good as the 17-55IS but the bad part is it's not AS hand holdable. By that, I mean the 17-55IS, because of the IS, is able to be handheld down to about 1/2 second on the 17 end and down to about 1/8 on the 55 end (from experience). If that's not too much of an issue, alas is very correct in saying the Tamron 17-50 is a good alternative (to be honest, I WAS going to get the 17-50 but changed my mind to this at the last second)

Yeah the Tammy 17-50 is about the same optically (I sold mine to get the 17-55) but I seem to have a little trouble with shake at slower shutter speeds so I opted for the 17-55.

Oh yes, the 17-55 is definitely the best lens in this FL to use for slow hand held shots. I prefer it over primes too. I can hand hold 1/4th at 55mm no problem. I can't hand hold any damn FL with a prime under 1/30th.
Size wise, its rather large and intrusive but the optics make you forget alll about it :)

Looks pretty good to me, but I'm not you. Sharp is your own opinion. I'd be happy with a 100% crop like that.
On another note, if you were shooting with your shutter speed at 1/125, those people must have been moving at about 50 mph for them to blur like that, haha. Were they truly moving pretty fast?

You'll love it. If you go in my Flickr, every night shot in there (minus the one of the moon and some of the earlier ones) were taken with this lens. I've said it before and so have others, that this is the sharpest lens in my bag, even more so than my L's (although the 70-200 is about tied). If you get a good copy, its WELL worth the money.
Congrats and enjoy. Go out and try some low light shots on purpose and see how slow you can hand hold this thing and still get razor sharp images.

Well the Nikon lens is better built but the Canon has the IS. The IS is something I would most definitely pay extra for as it can be a "life savor." While the Nikon doesn't have IS, it is still more expensive. So you are paying extra money for the build of the lens. They are about the same but I would rather have the IS anyday!

This is an interesting question. I think that people are right when they say the IS is definitely beneficial. My question is this: If Canon can build ED lenses designed for crop cameras then why can't Canon build L lenses for the same? Another point, is that right now the Nikon variant is quite a bit more expensive. I would pay the difference for the Canon version with IS and the Nikon build quality though...

Excellent. You can't get any better than the 17-55 on a crop body. In case you might be concerned with possible dust accumulation, make sure to slap a UV filter in the front. For the most part, that alone will make the dust issue a non-factor.

No date code on mine. I'm pretty sure only "L" lenses have date codes.

I know the 28 2.8 has date codes as well as a few other non-L's. I guess it just depends on what canon feels like putting dates on...

If you are signed up for a free photo hosting service like Photobucket or Flickr, you can put them on there and use the supplied [ IMG] code in here.
edit; it goes like [ IMG]***IMAGE URL***[ /IMG]

I just got the Canon EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS and LOVE it! We went to Galena, Il. and I got a nice wide angle shot of civil war general and President U. S. Grant's home. Then went inside and gave it a low light test. The interior of the home was very dim, but I got nice handheld photos without flash. Very happy! Will post more photos later.

To all of you with lots of lenses.....(and you have...)
I am just a beginner with a 500d and a 18-270 VR tamron lens (wich i love). I am exploring my options for a lower light lens (maybe the one in this topic)... BUT... How often do you guys switch these lenses?? I am very nervous to get dustproblems, but maybe this is all a bit overrisked by lots of people...? I just dont know. I really really dont want dust inside my 500d but how big is the risk if i change lenses, let's say 2 times a day?

No, either the 70-300 DO or the 45mm TS-E are.

I just take care to change em somewhat quick, and not to change in a dust place. I hate dust as much as you and was proud to see how little dust I had on my sensor when I bought the MP-E 65mm and took a 5x pic. I switch my lenses fairly frequently, although I try to put the lens I'm going to use most that day on the camera to minimize changes. Plus the mirror is in the way to block the small amount (if any) of incoming dust, so that helps too.

I've just done some more testes with the 50D and this lens .. i have to say, its so sharp, its scary .. its as sharp as my 135L and 35L .. i was actually thinking of giving this up for another 5D2 .. but after thinking about it .. I think i am going to keep it :p

Hi fellas,
Actually I have a 50D + Tamron 17-50 F2.8.
When I see your photos, I really want this lens. However I was wondering if I should upgrade to the Canon 17-55 F2.8 IS USM if I already have a Tamron 17-50 F2.8.
Would I be disappointing for the IQ and Sharpness ?
I know the IS and the USM from this lens is wonderful. Maybe the big difference for an old Tamron user and a new Canon user will be in the IS and the USM, won't it ?
Let me know what do you think about this plz.
Cheers,
Steeve

I actually owned the Tamron 17-50 before the 17-55 and I had a fantastic copy. The only reason I upgraded was because I was able to get it at a REALLY low price from CL. Otherwise I'd still be owning the Tammy for sure. That being said, I absolutely LOVE my 17-55 IS the IQ and IS combo cannot be beat. One of Canons top lenses IMO. It's the only thing keeping me from going full frame. So if you have the $$$ then get the 17-55 but if you're on a budget, the Tammy is an awesome lens to have in your arsenal.

Hey all!
I've been a long-time fan of the 17-55, although I haven't used it for quite a while since I gave my 30D to my son.
Anyway, I came across some shots from an afternoon wandering around in the woods a couple years ago, and thought I'd share!
This one (exif attached) is cool to me -- I was shooting completely handheld, I figured it was a good "exercise" for the lens, and pushed it for this shot, 1/4s, f/8, ISO 200 and even bending over, the IS held out quite well:
