This lens is en route to me with a CPL! I can't wait. I think I am going to also buy a GnD and ND (10 stop) filter with it.
Did you already got yours? I got mine and surely love it! I hope that you like yours too. Now just need to find a good subject to post here.

Help!
I have this lens on a 50D. After looking through here I am confused. None of my photos are this sharp. I do have one or two that are sharp, so that makes me think it is user error and not calibration. What gives? I'm a novice and shoot mainly in Av with a guess for the desired end result - generally portrait at 2.8, landscape at 11, everything else somewhere in between. If shooting at Tv images are still blurry. Many times I am in low light so I think the auto-aperature in Tv is limiting my DOF. Correct? But how is everyone getting sharpe images at night or low light? I use a center point focus only, could that have anything to do with it? BTW, the sharp images I have taken are all close range and large aperature.
How should I practice to learn how to shoot more in focus?
Thanks all!

I've heard of the 50D not liking this lens too well, but I would say run it through the micro adjustment process with the camera and fine tune it that way. It should come out fine.

What kind of shutter speeds are you getting in Av and what speed are you using in Tv (also at what focal lengths)?

I did get it, but it front focused about 2 - 3 CM, so I sent it back to canon for calibration. Hopefully I will have it back again by next week.

wow, even as lenses go, thats a pretty big FF issue right there! that's not even fixable with the in-camera micro adjust feature in some of the newer cameras.

Thx - Size has been reduced with a little PP so my guess is I have lost some detail, that said it was shot at 2,8 so focusing point is very small..
When I have some time I shall go through the Canon 50D AF Microadjustment for this lens..

Well I think I can rule out heavy handedness! :) I've sharpened slightly, turned the shirt monochromatic to bring out the texture and highlighted Odessa's eyes because of the heavy shadow.

Not really - I used 2 methods - single and high speed but I found single to work best - 3 seconds between each drop..
I used a plastic bag full of water and peirced a hole with a needle so it was a very small hole..

It depends on how you set up your resizing software and how your Web host is set up to provide a link.
If your jpeg, before uploading to a host, is a "good" size (maximum of 1024 pixels at the widest) and then after you upload it to a host and post it here it is smaller, then that means the your host shrinks your pic for its use, and the "default" link is to that shrunken view. To get around it, many hosts have a step provided to post the larger link. You have to look at their documentation to check that out.
Someone here can help it you let us know what host you are using or, if you check out the stickies about posting pics here for alternative ways of posting and the rules that apply.

There is nothing wrong with this lens. Fast 2.8, super fast AF, and IS, not to mention the near perfect focal length for an APS-C sensor, especially if you are looking for a walk around.
A lot of people complain about dust - I have not experienced this. A lot of people complain about the build quality and, yeah, for +$1,000 you would expect something heavy, but its not and that part of what makes this lens such a pleasure to use.

HAHA! funny stuff. And I gotta say that hand holding this lens for 1.3 seconds, even at 17mm with the IS would be daunting challenge. I don't think I could do it.

I'll have to admit, I love the MFD on this lens. You can get pretty darn close. Plus I like that WITH that MFD at 17mm you can get some distortion, which in some shots just kinda...works!

Thank you for the compliment. Yes, you caught me, it is an HDR. My wife had my camera the day before and accidentally set my EC to -1.33 and course being in Av I didn't look at the histogram and was horribly underexposed. So...I made 3 exposures with the 1 RAW file and ran them through Photomatix. I'm glad you like it and that it's not TOO obvious.

Curious as to why you would shoot wide open regardless then, ESPECIALLY for a landscape shot?

During the day I was going between f/2.8, f/5.6 and f/8.0 but on any shots at the wide end
of the lens AND with the subject far away I had no problem getting everything in focus,
even when wide open. I stopped down for more DOF when I had a closer subject. Some of
the cityscape shots I took at various apertures, and even pixel peeping I couldn't tell a
difference. I have found this lens to be very sharp wide open:

Dear Experts,
Help plz-
I am a hobbyist and hoping to get 17-55 f2.8 soon, from a friend in US visiting me this summer (I live in UK). I want to get a B+W CP filter along with it for landscaping. I have been to B&H online shop and note that there are about 15 types of CP filters:confused:.
I want to get some nice blue skies and fluffy clouds mostly and may be the occasional use for transparent water, glass buildings or for foliage. Any suggestions (been saving for this lens and hope to spend another 100 quid or so on the CP)
Many thanks guys

As long as it's multicoated and from a reputable brand (Kenko, B+W, Hoya) and 77mm of course for a 17-55mm f2.8 lens you can't go wrong. I'd go for their pro level models though like Pro1.

Brass is heavier and alloy is lighter. I think the glass is the same. Plus, people here say its easier to clean.
Oh..oops, you want CP filter, its on the website too. Get one that has MRC on it.

Ahh... Will be sad to let this go - selling it to fund my 24L II.

My lens showed up and as described. I have used this lens before and had an idea of what I was getting into but now that I have been able to dissect it a little better, Im VERY happy with the choice.
Heres my first shot out of it.... ZERO EDITING, no sharpening of any kind. just converted from raw to jpeg and resized.
ISO 400
17mm
f/2.8
1/60

Not bad for iso400 and wide open on a crop body...

I have had mine for a week and a half ish and I am more and more impressed with it every time I use it. At least for me, its a far more useful lens then my 17-40L or 24-105L, and Im not sure if maybe I just got a super sharp copy, or maybe a poor copy on both my L lenses but its also a decent amount sharper then both of them at even f/5.6(where I usually try and shoot the 24-105 and having 2.8 available is really really nice as well.
