wheres your cutoff point at where its needed?

jwcdds
8th of August 2009 (Sat), 14:52
When my shutter speeds start to dip below 1/60s at my desired aperture/ISO. By that time, I can assume I'm wandering into low-light situations and will then turn on the IS and let it run.

But outdoors, during the day, I'd be hard-pressed to find a situation where I'd be shooting at low enough shutter that IS would even play a role.

stevo8
8th of August 2009 (Sat), 15:32
So below 1/60 roughly? Is that just for the piece of mind that the is won't be trying to move around and cause false movement needlessly?

jwcdds
8th of August 2009 (Sat), 15:58
For me, I'm simply following the rough 1/(focal-length) rule. I am pretty confident being able to hold a shot steady at 1/FL. But if I'm at 55mm and my read-out is telling me the shutter will be 1/15s on a static object, it would be foolish for me to assume that the photo will come out crystal clear. It's easier for me to switch on the IS and let it do its job.

So when using my 55-250is... assuming I'm zoomed out at 250, if my shot is looking slower than the 1/250s, then that's when I'll switch it on. But if conditions are optimal, then there's absolutely no need for me to have the IS on. That's like leaving all the lights on in your house when you leave. The bulbs will burn out eventually and it'd be my fault for letting them burn out prematurely. :D

I was on a "all prime" kick for a while but got tired of switching lenses all the time (getting old and lazy I think) so I got one. So far I'm pretty impressed. It is prime-like sharp and the colors are realy nice too. I can see it becoming a favorite soon ...

I like mine as far as the IQ and fast focus but do not care for the sticky zoom. The zoom sticks just a little bit around the halfway point so it does not alway turn smoothly. In other words, it tends to feel a little tight in places when zooming a small increment at a time. I tested a brand new one at the store recently and I noticed it did the exact same thing so it seems to be a common build issue and not just my copy. I'd take the 16-35 over this lens any day despite the lesser range.

joosay, as I mentioned in another thread, you might consider putting some space between each photo so that it's easier to see each on its own. Flush with one another, it's a little difficult to at first distinguish where one leaves off and the other begins.

And that first one is killer! :)

Had this lens about 3 weeks and love it.. so much sharper than the kit 17-85. Going to the coast this weekend so hoping to give it a good outing.

This pic was taken very quickly in the bathroom mirror when I first purchased it, but the sharpness around the lens ring in the pic is phenomenal...

What filter did ya get for it?

From my experience, just an FYI to anyone interested in this lens, I've found that since it only stops down to f/22, an ND filter seems to be a must for sunset/sunrise shots, and is probably on my "next thing to get" list.

Thanks John,

It's actually a newly opened elevated park in New York City. It's called The High Line and you can check it out here - http://www.thehighline.org/ It's an old railroad site and they actually have some wooden lounge chairs that are attached on the rails and can be moved (but they have it locked in place, so I'm guessing they wanted to utilize the space).

It's still under construction and the park runs through some buildings :) I think they are trying to upscale the surrounding area.

All these shots are great but I really like this one: I believe I have been here or least somewhere very similar. My DIL had a broken kit lens while we were traveling (she has Rebel Xti) so I loaned her my 18-55 IS kit lens. She immediately fell in love with the difference and I wanted something new so she kept mine. Now I need this lens and you all have convinced me that it is just what I need to go with my 50D and the 55 - 2501:4 to 5.6 IS in my bag.
Thanks!

AKHOO, the 17-55 is your first lens? Tough to get better than this one.

johngpt,

Yes, it is my first lens. I wanted a standard zoom lens that has decent low light capabilities. I prefer shooting in natural light and my hands do tremor a little so the choice was simple. As SWMBO (aka wife) puts it, it's cheaper than my other primary interest - Burgundy.

Trixster!,

Those are some bloody brilliant shots.

The owner of the Ford GT, took off the supercharger and turned it into a twin-turbo powered V8. It sounded louder than a standard GT.

Dallas can get its share of weather, can't it! My son's team had a tournament there one December, and the temperatures varied from 33℉ up to 65℉, over three days!

These shots right here sold me on what this lens can accomplish ( along with an amazing photographer of course ;) amazing shots! ) I have gone back and forth between the Canon 24-70 & the Sigma 24-70 HSM wanting the added length ... these are fantastic from anything I've seen in those other lens sample threads, This lens & an 85 1.8 for some added reach should suit me fine... sorry for going on... lol... time to change my lens wishlist on my desktop... ( comeon you know we all have one... plus the 7D to upgrade my current body is on mine too which will be great with this lens for sure! )

1/3s? Damn, that is pretty ridiculously sharp for that low of a shutter speed.... Didn't realize the IS was that impressive (unless you rested it on the table?) Lowest I've gone I think is 1/10th
