It seems everything at the distance of the nose is sharp. I'd guess we're seeing short depth of field.

Which is exactly what I wanted - I focused on her eyes. I'm using a 20D right now which I'm not used to and my focusing isn't as spot on as it is with my 50D.
I attached the photo only to show that straight out of the camera the lens rocks. This is at 2.8 with a shutter speed of 1/20, hand held. It won't be razer sharp like that. But I didn't want to use the flash - I wanted to see how far I could push it. I thought it was pretty ok - ymmv.

yeah, mine has gotten loser since I got it, but I can't say it's to the point that the barrel pushes in with so much as just putting a lens cap on (though I usually only put the lens cap on when its at 17mm). But yeah, I'm sure it's normal.
And for not knowing what you're doin, it's sure an interesting result.

xdmg, maybe try to put a sports sweatband around the barrel to keep it from pushing in. I've seen one example before where that method worked really well.

Sharp, f/2.8, IS. Key recipes for 'expensive'. No, it shouldn't be considered an L. A hypothetical 24-88mm f/2.8L IS would cost far more.

Well if you need uber low light IS with no subjects moving, this lens is for you if your body can't keep up with iso noise.

That was me! Interesting story on that... I was convinced that i was going to get the 17-40 over the 17-55 due to the build and a few other things until i read a post on how to get the dust out with a bit of DIY lens surgery, and then found a copy of this lens for less than the $$$ of 17-40. Well, what was i to do??? The lens comes on Monday so i will have a play with it and post a follow up on another thread i started here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=760013
Im sill not convinced that i won't end up with a 17-40 and a 24-105 as well... then i really will be able to make an informed choice. Like a friend of mine once said, "if you thrown enough money at a problem, it will eventually go away".
AluminiumCloud
9th of October 2009 (Fri), 06:42
Well... got home and to my surprise there was a small box waiting for me. I have to say that my initial impressions of the (albeit used) 17-55 i have just received are disappointing. I know the build has been debated often, but i had still hoped for better from a lens in this price range. Every part of the lens seems loose and fragile. The zoom ring has play in all directions and is not smooth, the manual focus ring is the same. The lens barrel also has play in its housing. Cosmetically the lens is flawless... no marks or scratches and there is not a single spec of dust inside. The IS and AF seem to work fine, and i will test these more tomorrow. Without a date code it is hard to know its age, and without having held a brand new copy its impossible to gauge the amount of used it has received.
So my options are send it back and:
a) pay the balance on a brand new one
b) go the original route and get the 17-40
c) option b, plus get a used 24-105 to go with it for double the price.
Even if the 17-55 is 'tight' brand new i don't feel confident having seen what, with a bit of use, this lens will eventually become. OH, how i really wanted to love this lens!!!!

I bought this lens 2 weeks ago and have not had the opportunity to use it until today (I've been playing with my other lens :) ). Quick shot of a flower. Thanks for letting me share. I really LOVE how versatile this lens is compared to my others.

Dear members,
Has anybody used the new 15-85 and if so how does the IQ compare with 17-55. I am keen to know how they compare even though they are completely different in the sense that the new 15-85 does not have the constant f2.8. So leaving the DOF, range, IS, BD and CA issues aside how is the image sharpness, colour rendition for a casual user who will be taking shots of kids and family functions mostly indoors. Members out there……. any thoughts shall be very much appreciated.
I have been following threads LIKE THIS (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=770817) but any thoughts from 17-55 users would be more informative.

Hey guys, finally I ordered this upcoming lens :)
So now, I'm looking after a good UV and Pola circu filters.
I hesitate between B+W UV MRC slim or regular version and B+W Pola circu MRC Kaserman Slim or regular version.
In the futur (less than 1year) I plan to get the Canon 10-22mm, so same diameter.

If you plan to get the 10-22, I recommend getting a slim CPL and UV filter. I am no speaking from experience, so I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure a normal CPL or even an F-PRO will show up in the form of some heavy vignetting on a 10-22. As for the 17-55, I don't notice any vignetting with normal thickness filters.
For the record, I use a B+W Kaesemann as my CPL and can't say enough about it. Great CPL!

I went with the B+W 77mm XS-PRO Digital MRC UV Haze 010M Filter. I'd read that the slim would allow for more crisp images. Most I've spent yet for a UV filter. Seems worth it. I think I'm going to get one for my 70-200. At the time googling found best price from maxsaver. They're out of Hong Kong. Delivered promptly, as advertised.
