Okay guys, finally I went with the B+W UV (010) MRC and B+W CPL KSM MRC. All regular version due to the fact that with the slim version we can't fix the lens cap.

I will see later when I buy my next Canon 10-22 for another slim version.

Thanks guys, and I'm kind of excited to post my upcoming photos with this lens ;)

Cheers

Can anyone tell me if you guys have noticed a bit of corner softness @17mm on the 17-55mm? I notice that the upper left of mine can be particularly soft...with the upper right a bit as well. Not really noticeable unless I place detailed objects in the upper left and right corners but when I do it annoys me a bit. Might be a decentering issue but I can't send it in to get looked at until my December cruise is done. I heard that since the warranty on mine is through adorama that the service can take a month :(.

On the same topic, has anyone ever sent a lens with a decentering problem in to Canon and actually had it come back fixed?

I love my copy that I use with my 40D. I prefer this combo to the 5D with 24-105 that I have also used.

My 17-55 ring is really smooth, is it normal ? 'Cause I read that at the beginning it should be a little bit hard to turn the ring and has a extreme hard point at 34mm.

Thank you - since 2 weeks ago I came across this guy Andrzej Dragan (http://andrzejdragan.com/) I love his work and find it very insperational, I want to create similar image's from people I know and give them the Dragan effect (google it) it's a slow process but I think a rewarding one if you like this kind of thing. I've been at photography 6 months but to date I have not settled on a subject I like, well untill now :D...

No, it's an Illness....unless you're thinking of doing it professionally, you'll branch off into something else you have fun shooting, and find a need to add more 'stuff'.....but extremely nice work for being at it 6 months. Very impressive.

Got this lens this afternoon. First impressions are awesome: great colors, great quality, lightning fast focus, great bokeh. I sold a 17-40L and Tamron 28-75/2.8 and using the 17-55 makes me kick myself for not just getting it to begin with

How do people find this lens hand held?

i have a 450d and want a high quality lens to be a permanent fixture to the front of my camera. The Image quality of this lens is not an issue as it is superb but i have problems with hand held shots. Most of my shots are while out and about with the family I need a fast lens with good IS and this has been recommended as one of 'THE' lenses to have. I would love an 'L' lens but the 2 i have in mind (17-40 f4 & 24-105 f4 IS) are both f4 and i don't like hiking up the ISO above 400 in fear of noise. The 24-105 would be fine if i could manage with the f4 and it was 17mm at the wide end but it's not.

I know that this lens does use 'L' glass so would it be the one to go for?

17-55. I owned both the 17-40L and 24-105L and neither were anywhere near as versatile as the 17-55. The 17-40L is slower and lacks IS. The 24-105 has an odd focal length for an APS-C camera (IMO) and slower. It's a perfect combo with the 5D/5D II but not as sparkling on APS-C. For handholdability, I found I simply got many more keepers from the 17-55 than the 17-40 or 24-105 - especially 17-40L.

My PP is fairly remedial, I'm afraid. Nothing fancy. Opened up the RAW's in ACR5.5 (beta for the 7D) and then boost the contrast a little, and that was it. I think it works well for inanimate objects. I haven't shot portraits much so I don't know if my method would work for skin tones. :D

It's been known to happen. You'll need to call up canon to get a quote if its not under warranty anymore.

Mission peak. http://www.bahiker.com/eastbayhikes/missionpeak.html It is lovely in the winter with the fog and all. Not as great in the summer as it is fairly hot with no tree cover and very few redeeming qualities in general :-).

I have more photos at http://juvvi.smugmug.com/Hiking/Mission-Peak/Mission-Peak/10157075_vYk7M/1/713106868_iX7Aa. I used the Cotton carrier the second time around and I tell you I am in love. That cotton carrier is a fantastic boon for hiking!

Nice shots Hogster86 , and Joove , that second shots is stunning !

Thank you! The fog has given me different scenes each time, every time it is different and that one with the two hikers walking into the fog was just perfect.

All you need is a 17-55 and maybe the 10-22.

If you're going to shoot surfers, you probably need a 300mm or a 70-200 F2.8 with a converter.

Goincarcrazy
18th of November 2009 (Wed), 11:34
The 17-55 fits most needs, but if I ever went traveling out west or to Hawaii or even to Alaska again, I'd have to get a 10-22 for the trip. I've got the zoom covered with a 100-400, so I'd be set there, but I'm sure some of the vistas in Hawaii are simply breathtaking!

I went through every single page of this thread (took a LOOONG time) and was stunned by the image quality on show, I just expected more instant success with this lens, and always worry I might get one of the bad copies, especially when some people talk of going through 5 copies to get a good one!?

Excellent images being posted everyone! Keep it up!

Here're some shots from the Guildford House Gallery (Surrey, UK) where an exhibition of prints from the Guildford Photographic Society was being officially opened by the Mayoress of Guildford :) Lighting conditions were horrible and each shot had quite a bit of PP done to them after ... first time I've shot a whole event in RAW too (not that I do many/any events ;)) and BOY was I glad – I thought they came out pretty well in the end! :)

Rest are here:

http://www.pbase.com/hogster/ghg_opening_201109

I was trying to get a balance of ambient light and flash which meant pretty high ISOs were used ... in hindsight I should have just shot with flash from the get-go with a lower ISO – the ambient light added little to the final photos. Nevertheless the noise was easily cleaned up (I love the 7D's noise grain!) :)

Cheers!

Ive had dust Im mine as well, canon cleaned it out for free. Its not the dust in your lens that you see, its on your sensor, trust me. You would have to have TONS of dust in the lens in order to slightly degrade pic quality. If your seeing spots in your landscape shots, its sensor dust, not lens dust.

Well, I shot with my 70-200 and my 135L. I shot bright skies so that I could make sure it was not my sensor. They looked good to me. I don't think it is my sensor.
Did you have warranty or just send it in via cleaning request?

Thanks Kevin it's one of my favourite shots from my recent trip to Oz.
The 18-55mm was gift to me when I started out last year so I can't really sell it (well I could but I'd feel guilty). I'll keep hold of it until one of my other friends picks up the hobby.
