Hi, users of this lens, I have a question. Sometimes (not every time) when I change the focal length, I feel that it's not smooth at 35mm. Is that normal?

(My apologies for repeating this if it has been mentioned before. There are just too many to read.)

Yes, that is normal for this lens. It either goes away or you just get used to it after a while.
Oh, no, tonight when I used this lens at a friend's home, I couldn't turn it down to anything lower than 35mm! It just stopped there and I was afraid that if I turned forcefully I would break something. What should I do? :(

Have you tried gently whacking it a couple times, turn it maximally toward 55mm and then try to go past 35mm?

I'm a very unlucky guy with lenses. My Sigma 50mm has to be sent back for microadjustment. Since I got it used, it's out of warranty and I had to pay for the repair, amking the total cost I spent on it more than a new copy. Now, the Canon representative asked me to send this in for inspection and repair. Again, I got it used and I will have to pay for the repair. :(

Hello New to the forum and just taken the step up from compact camera to a DSLR. Had the 550D for a day or two but then held the 7D in my hand and just new I had to have it….

Ended up with the kit with the 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. I have on order the EF 35mm f/2 for the purpose of indoor photography without flash

After reading trough the various forums here I wonder if I have made the right decision regarding to optics. I see that the EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM is a “reference” lens that can be used both indoor and outdor. The lens sample pictures tread for it shows samples that have a kind of magic to it that I don’t feel that the sample treads for the two other lenses have to the same degree. This can of course be because of that there are many more that owns the EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM than the two other leses.

I need one “walk around” lens that is going to be on the 7D until I can afford a good tele zoom or something else nice. The use for the lens is 50/50 indoor outdoor. Indoor preferably without a flash. I mostly take pictures of people but also some nature photography.

I’m in the position that I can get a full refund for both the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and EF 35mm f/2 and for the money buy a EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS instead.

What are your recommendations? one had the lenses and compared? Should I exchange or should I keep the lenses I have?

Pleas give some of your thoughts to a newbee on the forum!

I would exchange the 15-85mm for the 17-55mm. I don't know too much about the 35mm, but I own the 50mm f/1.4, could be used for nature photography.

From what I have seen the 15-85mm lens is pretty close to the 17-55 optically. The main difference that you will see, is that the 17-55 will provide a more shallow depth of field than the 15-85 due to it's ability to open up to f/2.8. This increased separation tends to give images more of a "pop" because the foreground element has more separation from the background. The 17-55 also has a 3 stop image stabilizer, so this combined with the f/2.8 aperture will make it easier to take indoor images without flash. I would personally take the 17-55 any day, but some people would rather have the increased range. If you can afford to keep the 15-85 and save for the 17-55 than you would have the best of both worlds: a top notch f/2.8 standard zoom and a great travel lens.

Is that exeptional or normal with this lens??

I'm still in the procedure of justifying this lens as upgrade for my tammy.

Flare performance is this lenses only weakness in my opinion, but it is seldom a huge issue. That's about what to expect as far as flare. I moved up from the Tamron 17-50 and it did a much better job with flare. The main reason to upgrade to the 17-55 is the IS and USM. Mine 17-55 is sharper as well, but not by a lot.

Oh, no, tonight when I used this lens at a friend's home, I couldn't turn it down to anything lower than 35mm! It just stopped there and I was afraid that if I turned forcefully I would break something. What should I do? :(

Canon charged me for about $100 to fix it. Hopefully I'll get it back this week.

I use a B+W Slim MRC UV filter on my 17-40L... I guess the main thing is using a slim filter to prevent flaring/distortion/vignetting on really wide lenses...

The B+W is nice, actually--even comes with a lens cap since the Canon version won't fit on the slim filter. There's no decrement in IQ that I can find.

IMHO none. I dont use any filters unless I know it will be in harsh conditions other than that they stay off. I used to use filters but someone made a comment of just imagine yourself taking your pictures thru a glass window and how it would degrade your shots.

Well I'm not a guy who can or like to be super carefull with my lenses that'sy use Hoya the main reason.

I currently i use Hoya UV HMC filters, but since this lens will cost me a fortune anyway I thought i'd get a more expensive filter for it.
Regarding lens cap how does a filter interfere with it?

With the B+W slim filter, the rim of metal around the filter is too thin for the Canon lens cap to grab the inside edge as it usually does--the B+W lens cap that comes with it fits around the outside of the filter ring.

Nice shots, love the colors! The B+W Polarizer is worth the money you think (it's so expensive due to the 77mm filter size, at least over here in Holland)?

Here's one from me. My dog captured with the 7D and the 17-55mm.

The great thing about this lens is the sharpness/details and its ability to allow handheld shooting also inside with its big aperture and excellent IS.

The B&W polarizer is by far better than my cheapo $30 ones I used on my other kit lenses. The contrast and the jump in polarizing as you turn the filter is definitely better than the cheaper ones. Maybe a middle of the line would be decent, but I have no complaints with mine...even though it was expensive.

Nice shots.. I work right around there. The Katyn Memorial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyn_massacre) statue is very disturbing; I am captivated by it every time I walk by.

Hey Hairy_Moth-

I totally agree. Not knowing it was there or what it represented, I ended up learning quite a bit about the Polish Massacre.
