I find it perfect for travel. I usually take along a telephoto and my uwa but the 17-55 is what stays on the camera for most of my shots. It's fast enough for most situations but has the flexibility of a zoom which is nice for travel.

I agree! You can see a list of my equipment below. The 17-55 is almost always on one of my bodies. Since I do a lot of landscapes, the 10-22 is usually on the other one. The long lenses go on for sports and wildlife. Occasionally the 70-200 and the 100-400 are both mounted, but the 17-55 is by far my most used lens. It is the one best suited for the broadest range of situations. It can be used in both good light and poor light and it is very sharp. I will add this though, since you asked about city photography. The 10-22 is particularly well suited for the tight situations encounted in cities, especially if you have a cropped sensor body.

Ha it does sound strange... I'm not sure, but I find certain lenses inspiring. If for example the focal length is just right, or it has particularly nice tonal or blur qualities.

Well good news, this lens gives you options! Obviously the focal length (you can shoot anywhere from 17mm to 55mm), you can shoot at those lengths at 2.8 and still have very sharp images, AND add a touch of IS into the mix and pray for some still subjects and you got yourself an AWESOME night lens! Not to mention the contrast is nice, colors are pretty darn good, and due to its fairly close MFD, you can get the fisheye look at 17mm, or you can get some amazing bokeh when focused up close on something at 55mm. Its a ridiculously versatile lens, and if I didn't go full frame, this would still be the lens most often on my camera.

It's an absolutely fantastic lens for travel.... having said that, I understand your "boring" comment. I've owned one for a little over a year and am about to sell it because, as great of a lens as it is, I'm a little tired of it and feel I would have more fun with a fast prime in that range. It will be replaced by either the 24L II or zeiss 35/2... haven't made up my mind yet on which.

A fast prime IS fun and that's why I have my Sig 30 1.4. But for travel I'd take the 17-55 every time.

I worked with white balance, tweaked the brightness just a little bit, did some detail sharpening and removed the tripod's shadow. I think most people will like it with the shadow removed, but I'm sure some will like the "warmer" look of the original image best.

is this lens fast (both in aperture of f/2.8 and focusing speed) for indoor sports, such as volleyball and basketball?

Darkwand
26th of November 2010 (Fri), 14:31
That depends on how close you are, I tend to want f/2 for low light (street lighting at night) and fast things but that'll mean primes.

If you're in range the 17-55 is as good a zoom lens as you can get, the autofocus is very quick.

llie19
26th of November 2010 (Fri), 14:59
thanks. fast focusing is really important, and you are right that indoor lighting ca vary significantly depending on the gym.

and is this lens good for indoor portraiture? i am looking for a lens that can do indoor sports, and also indoor close distance portraiture with strobes. i have a 1.6 crop camera, so want some more on the wide side of focal length. There are 16-35, 17-40, and some big aperture primes (24L, 35L, 50/1.4 or L), but i guess the big aperture does not really matter for indoor portraits?

One of us is confused.. As far as auto focus goes: the lens is quite sufficient.
As far as being fast in aperture of f/2.8 -- It is an f/2.8 -- that is the answer. There is no f/2.8 that is faster than another (except maybe for manufacturing imperfections).

As for IQ, in my opinion*, there really isn't any better zoom for this camera at (or about) this zoom range... including the Ls.
Some may argue that there are more useful zooms (more range).. that is not what I'm talking about.

*This is based on my experience with this lens and reviews I have read of this and other lenses.

It focuses fast enough, but would be too short for volleyball and basketball in my opinion. You would be much better off going with a 85 f/1.8 or 100 f/2 for that environment. You could also go with a 70-200 f/2.8, but a lot of gyms are too dark for even f/2.8 glass unless you have a body that is VERY good at high ISO (or you will be using strobes).

you are right. gym lighting can vary a lot. i actually have a 70-200 2.8, so i have the long reach covered. and in the gym i shoot in it's barely enough, you have to crank up the iso and/or raise exposure in post processing.

nice to hear that it can focus fast enough for sports. pretty soon the 70-200 2.8 will be the only lens i have, and i am really looking for a general purpose/walk around lens, that could also do indoor sports and indoor portrait, which are two things i shoot the most.

Wow! Nice use of the lens.

This picture is processed, but only a few basic adjustments in LR3. The pond's color is that hue, and the wooden dock is sun-bleached.

Has any one got an sample pictures using this lens wide open between 17 and 28mm at or close to the MFD?

Thinking about buying this lens and wanted to see how at peforms at this criteria. I know that it perfoms excellently in nearly every other situation.

I don't have a good image but i have a image at MFD and 17mm

I believe the kit lens (18-55mm) is much better at "macro" work because it get's closer, it would have much worce distortion at 17mm though

I went outside and shot one for you.

17mm, f/2.8, minimum focusing distance. Camera on tripod, 40D in live view, and I just slid the tripod closer and farther until I got that opening bud in focus. The photo with the white stroked rectangle shows the expanded section in live view that I used to focus.

I measured the distance from that bud. It was 15.5 cm from bud to end of the lens, and 31.0 cm from bud to the focal plane of the 40D's sensor.

question for those posting, how much PP is required to make the colors 'pop' for you on this lens? i see some shots from people on different lens who claim straight out of camera and they seem to pop a lot more (maybe b/c L glass). i shoot raw, and pp is a must for me if i want the colors to 'pop' like that with this lens .

I also shoot raw, except for sports, which is now rare. My Adobe Camera Raw settings are set at zero everything, so the image that opens there is markedly flat. So I always have to pp my images. The raw file captures the "potential" image that I visualize when I'm shooting. Before upgrading to PsCS4 and the Camera Raw that could see the raw files from my 40D, I shot a lot of jpegs, and straight out of camera, those images looked much more saturated and would "pop."

I don't much care what straight out of camera looks like. I want as much data as possible in my file, and I want to be the one controlling the image. I find this lens conveys light superbly to the sensor, so that later I can create the image I had in mind while shooting.

Damn, I have a problem.
I was planning on buying this lens for a long time, I really like it's focal length and aperture.
But now I came across the Canon 24mm 1.4 II.
It's double the price, but it's also about double the nice..

What do you guys think?
I will be using it on a 7D.

It sounds like a trade off of flexibility for aperture?

Have you seen this comparison tool (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?FLI=2&API=0&Lens=398&Camera=474&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0&LensComp=480&SampleComp=1)? Though it is far from a perfect tool, especially for this comparison, it might help you decide.

That's the problem indeed, flexibility vs aperture..

Thanks for the tip!
Although that's only pixel-peeping in my opinion :p
