Just got mine yesterday. Haven't had time to more than just take a couple of quick portraits of my golf buddies at the course. I'm really impressed with the sharpness at f8 (I could even tell where my friend missed a spot shaving that morning ), and looking forward to getting out and giving it a real test. I can already see an improvement over the 17-40 L that I sold to buy this one.

RafaPolit

Congrats Preeb on the new lens. Its a hard decision to choose between an L and an EF-S, specially if you already have the L and you need to fork an additional five or six hundred for it... the good news is that this lens is actually worth it! :)

Now, if you are impressed at f8, where almost all lenses are sharp, wait till you see sharpness at f4! which was your old lens's widest... now you are stopped down a full f-stop at f4! That's just fantastic. I know that f4 is perfect for me, f3.2 is almost as good and f2.8 I can count for even for demanding situations (though perhaps not for the sharpest image contest :) ).

At any rate, congrats again and welcome to the club!

Rafa.

I've finally done it. After months of Sigma 17-50 v Canon 17-40 I went the other way, and bought the Canon 17-55. It will be here tomorrow I hope, and I will be posting by the weekend. Some of the shots in this thread swayed me after initially disregarding this lens due to non L status. Thanks to you all for inspiration.

I got mine today. It was a hard decision between this or the sigma 17-50 because I had always disregarded this lens and had the mindset that it was overpriced because it was "only an EFS lens." (Owning L lenses does this to you) I used my mates 17-55 on the weekend and was impressed. I sold my tamron 17-50 recently due to poor AF performance. Not sure what im gong to do with my 24-105 yet, Im hoping it doesnt spend all its life in the bag now that I have the 17-55. Im a little worried about dust, I placed a UV filter on it as soon as I got it out of the box, is there anything else I can do?

Its time for lunch so here is one of my first shots with this lens

Congrats on the lens. I have had mine with a UV filter on since day one, and I also, if ever faced with a dusty-er environment, I am sure to blow and/or brush any dust that may have gathered on the barrel that extends, which I guess is how the dust gets in: you are zoomed in and the dust settles, then you zoom in and that dust is pulled into the lens.

I have ZERO dust specs on mine, glass as clean as day one. I believe you should be fine.

Rafa.

Slap a good UV filter in front of it. That should significantly cut down on dust getting under the front element.

I have never used this lens without a UV filter attached to it. Does the quality of the UV filter make a difference? After all a filter on the front is going to stop dust no matter what quality as long as its airtight?

I'm convinced the biggest issue with dust ingress is the zoom mechanism, it doesn't seem as tight as L series lens.

Hope Jacobs don't take too long sending it back to Canon.

I finally broke down and ordered one from B&H. I recently bought a used 5D and slapped my trusty 24-105 on it and I haven't taken it off. Then I thought, what am I going to use as a walkabout lens on the 7D now? Pretty excited to get 2.8 back on a zoom.

It's that clear plastic thing that's protecting the spokes in case the chain falls off on that side of the cassette. In 20 years, I don't know of anyone who's had spoke damage from a chain falling off. Maybe it's more common with cheap, old, under-maintained bikes, but not the multi-thousand dollar bikes that are kept up.

Friends,

I was on a plane trip yesterday and the morning was very, very clear... all the region's highlands were clear with just a tad of haze to convey depth. I made this (of course, through a dirty, scratched, reflective and plastic airplane window :) ).

http://www.rafaelpolit.com/images/content/full/img_1777630cc7ff90ede9fa942f97dbada0.jpg

The foreground is mount 'Corazón', the middle ground snowy mountains are the 'Ilinizas' and the background huge snowed mountain is the 'Chimborazo' (6,268.2 metres / 20,565.0 ft), our highest peak.

Hope you guys like it, best regards,
Rafa.

Rafa, if you can get a shot like that through the dirty scratched plastic window, I feel better about using a good quality UV filter for protection :-).

Thanks very much for the kind words rogue-wave, nikmar08, spacemonkey_! Nikmar, that is actually a perfectly clear window! Don't see any of the usual problems that appear with that 'plexi-glass' stuff. Nice shot.

Oh, about that... I have always defended UV filters and have purchased very expensive ones for all my lenses... my $100 kit lens had a $30 filter and my 17-55 has a $70 UV filter on it... guess what? Doing my job yesterday shooting a construction worker, a small spec of concrete paste jumped into the glass! I very gently wiped off the filter and breathed in heavily in relief of knowing it wasn't the front element!!!

So yes, UV filters all the way for me! :)

Rafa.

Sure does. That's why I spent the extra on my 70-200 for IS too. I'm not always in a position to be able to lug a tripod around with me, and I don't want to limited by that. IS is the only way to fly from about 35mm and up.

hi, i'm new to the forum. great pics and very informative. I haven't gotten through all the pages yet (but have gotten through 250 of them!). Just bought this lens and wanted to find out if you feel it is necessary to also invest in a speedlite -- especially given the low-light abilities of this lens. I am interested in portraits (mostly of family/kids, family events like the occasional wedding or holiday gatherings) and general vacation/travel. If you think that a speedlite is essential, I've read up on the 430ex II, and it seems like the one that most people recommend for a non-pro like me. any thoughts? would appreciate any input. thanks!

IMO: Shoot without flash for a while and see if it's a limiting factor. I wouldn't go spending that kind of money on a hunch from anyone on this forum. Everyone's needs are different.

The lens' ability on low light is fantastic!, that's true, but specially for family and kids, most situations you are not in control of the situation, and they happen during night. While you can instruct your wife to stand still while you do a 1/30th shot at f3.2 and ISO1600 (that's my usual correct exposure indoors at night for a good shot), the same is not true for kids! So you either boost to ISO6400 which will yield terribly blotchy images to reach 1/100th and even then you get so thin Depth of Field that you'll most surely will get out of focus images, or you use a flash.

I find it that indoors, I much rather have a not-greatly-lit but overall good image with a flash lighting the scene than beautifully lit out of focus or blurred nephews.

If you don't go for the flash, you'll find yourself popping up the bult-in flash which will get you back here trashing the lens, as the images will be awful and you'll have a black spot on the bottom of the frame.

The 430EXII allows you to bounce the flash, and is powerful for your kids events such as Christmas shows on the school or the likes. That is the one I have and I am very happy with it! The ability to reflect it also provides a whole new set of tools for your creative needs and provides much nicer light for indoor family events.

I'd go for the flash right away. But, again, that is just me. Best regards,
Rafa.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting the answer is "no," (see my gear list), but I am suggesting a purchase based on demonstrated limiters rather than other people's situations.

I second waterrockets. And yet have to say what Rafa mentioned is what I eventually realized after having delayed my decision to buy a flash for a long time. I eventually bought 430 II and am very happy I did.

A flash and a good steady tripod are two of the other very essential pieces of gear in addition to a camera and lenses. My 2cents!!

i second that too. a flash is an important item when u r doing photography.

I do use flash during broad day light too. this is to remove the shadow on the subject. I am still learning how to full utilize off camera flash.

Waterrockets, I fully understood your stance, sorry if I appeared to be antagonizing you... its just that I have read many frustrated lens users that believed that this or other fast lenses would be the end to the flash days only to find that not to be true. Therefore, I believe having a good speced flash handy is very important.

Of course, as you said, each one needs to decide this based on their own experience, as you very well pointed out.

Rafa.

Just started to use this lens today as my 7D arrived with it yesterday. The image quality is really impressive, and the IS works way better than I thought it would (Never had an IS lens before)

Only thing I don't like is how physically large the lens is. It's not that heavy (a good deal lighter than my old 24-70L) but its still pretty large. This is why I sold all my zoom lenses and went to primes, because they aren't as enormous.

I'll hang onto this lens for a while and see how I get along with it, the focal length range is quite useful on a 1.6x body, that part I like, and like I mentioned, the image quality is really impressive!

I'll post some samples this weekend most likely.

agphotography,

Yes, the lens is considerably large and heavy (though not as heavy as 'the brick' you mentioned). Perhaps if size is of critical importance, the 15-85 is a good compromise of quality, focal range, price, and build?

I debated long to decide which to get.

Rafa.

Rafa,

I've been looking into that lens as well, the thing I like about the 17-55 is the fixed f/2.8 aperture, that's of great value to me.

I think if I were to trade it out I'd go with something wider like the 10-22.
In my experimenting though I am trying it on the 7D without the BG-E7 grip on the camera and it actually still handles really well. It's not as front heavy as using the 24-70. The size is much more manageable this way. Just like my 5D I'll likely just leave the grip for studio usage.

Why trade it for the 10-22 when you can have both? ;) I think that they compliment each other quite nicely.

I have both. The 17-55 is my most used lens and the 10-22 is a very close 2nd. If you are going to do landscapes, you will have a lot of use for both of them. I have 2 cameras and one is usuallly attached to one camera and the other one to the other camera.

My primary camera is a 5DmkII so I don't want to start investing in too many EF-S lenses. I already have too many lenses as it is!

I was using the lens all day yesterday and today and it handled exceptionally well. I'm impressed with the image quality! I'll give it a run for a while.

Hey friends,

I shot today at a cousin's wedding (as a guest to the wedding that brought a camera, not the hired photographer :) ) and I kept thinking to myself: the light is incredibly beautiful today! We had a semi-overcast sky with some nice but defined shadows, some natural 'fill' light provided by the white tents set up everywhere... it was a pleasure shooting.

I thought I'd share one of the bride's pictures here:

Rafa.

What I will regret is not having a spare 1k in the bank. :o how fast do they get dirt in the glass like everyone complains about?

Slapping on a filter seems to prevent it form collecting dust. No problem with my copy!

Hey Alfredo, nice photo. One question though. Is that photo straight from the camera or did you do some pp work? Im asking as I'm wondering if it's that sharp or you worked the photo. I'm trying to learn my camera and do decent within the camera calabilities as I don't have pp nor a pc to work the photos.

Wow this lens does suck in dust. I'm sure it's not all from me as I've only had the lens a couple weeks, but I looked at the front element in strong light and I saw a lot of light dust in the internal elements. Doesn't affect image quality, but that's disheartening. I'll have to get a filter for it or something.

Thank you! I shoot in RAW and this photo did have some PP work in Lightroom 3. I applied noise reduction, sharpened it some, applied lens correction, and adjusted the levels. The original was fairly sharp to start off so I think you will be ok using the internal presets of the camera. I assume you have a 7d? This lens has outstanding image quality. I too use a filter to protect the front glass. Recommend a B+W UV filter.
