Ronald, I am not so sure that there is much drop in contrast and colour. Definitely not a HUGE difference between my 70-200 2.8 IS and my 17-55. Bokeh is definitely not AMAZING on the 17-55 but its decent. See a few of my shots above for examples :D
I think the color rendition difference is noticeable enough that I could probably pick which came from which, and the bokeh with specular highlights isn't very nice compared to the brick.
As far as the contrast, it does have some, but I remember not having to add contrast most of the time with the brick, whereas now it's a standard part of processing. Not a big deal, but it's one more step, you know?

I just went through all 21 pages of this thread, some spectacular images in here (special mention to Erik!)... I'm convinced and I'll be ordering this lens in the near future. I'll be hanging on to my 17-40 for awhile until I'm 100% convinced the 17-55 can do everything just as well. Thanks alot fellas, my wallet hates you!

You do not necessarily need a filter on any lens. Although a polarizing filter can be useful in many situations and any kind of filter can protect the lens front element.

The Circular Polarizer (CPL) filter can be very handy, as it will blue up the sky, as well as help you eliminate glare/reflections off of non-metalic surfaces. It's not something you would leave on there day-to-day.
However, I am a believer in keeping a UV filter on the lens at all times. My 17-55 runs around with a B+W MRC UV filter and a hood. This is probably overkill, but it's a kilobuck lens so I'm not taking any chances. :)

Hi, everyone -- New to the forums. Some fantastic photos here! After hours of research, I finally decided to order the 30D body and the 17-55 lens. Should be here this Thursday!
I do quite a bit of travelling and noticed many suggestions for "walk-around" lenses, etc. I like to go as light as possible for mobility and security reasons.
The other lens I am considering purchasing is the 70-200 F2.8L IS. Of course, the 17-55 will be my flag-ship for now. The 70-200 will probably stay at home most of the time.
I know that these are trivial questions, but do you recommend any other lenses for travelling and landscape/urban photography? What are some issues I should expect with the 17-55? Any other input is appreciated.

My only two lenses are the 17-55 and the 70-200 2.8 IS. I can basically shoot anything! These two lenses are a great combo, you won't regret it!
If you are travelling lots you may want to consider the 70-200 f4 IS instead, its a little lighter!

I wouldn't say that it's just a "little lighter". The 4L IS is half the weight of the 2.8L IS!

Thats a good set up. I also have the 17-55IS and dont find it too large now im used to it. Might i suggest the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 as a smaller alternative. I find i use mine if im out all day and know i wont be needing the IS.
Also maybe the 70-200 f/4 IS rather than the f/2.8 if size is important.

Thanks for your suggestions... I am leaning towards the 70-200 2.8 because of potential low light conditions I may encounter. Can't wait to post some shots from the 17-55 upcoming week!

I think the color rendition difference is noticeable enough that I could probably pick which came from which, and the bokeh with specular highlights isn't very nice compared to the brick.
has anyone who owns both lenses taken you up on this challenge yet?
As far as the contrast, it does have some, but I remember not having to add contrast most of the time with the brick, whereas now it's a standard part of processing. Not a big deal, but it's one more step, you know?
if you shoot RAW, adding contrast in PP is mandatory no matter what lens you are using, ime. so, no big deal.

PP using lightroom. lighting was tough to get proper white balance on some of them so i just convert to b/w with color tone to them.

Thanks, Erik. Your Impreza looks deceiving. Spoiler in the back would yield a WRX, but then I see no hood scoop!
This was my first shot at post-processing. I shot in JPEG/RAW mode just for comparison and can definitely see a big difference between the JPEG and the post-processed RAW file. I wish the railway photo was a bit more centered, but I had no tripod and basically just snapped away. Any other particular advice you can give?

Hooray!, I just got my 17-55 back from Canon. If anyone followed, I sent a complaint about my lens dust issue. A little while later, I sent in my lens demanding a free clean. Which they did. And now, it has come back, and it's like new. Maybe even better than new. Seems like they tidied up the zoom ring, and my images seem contrast, sharper. I have reason to believe the dust is coming from the front, so now I have a Heliopan filter slapped on.

No, that's the 20th Anniversary Masterpiece Optimus Prime. =T You can easily tell by how much detail was put into designing the toy. The easiest give away are the individual fingers.

this is a great lens and all talked about issues like flares , CA and dust are not true.
I have had it for a long time , no dust .
I have had it for a long time , no flare in my photos.
No CA either , the Tamorn had the CA issue, though my Canon 17-55IS is pretty good .
The only one issue of the lens is scare people a way when I it at them.
Also , the hood of the lens is hard to find in Asia ,next time , I will go back to So-cal get it there , but I wont go there till Next year.
Oh well , shooting real life people is hard but at least with the 17-55IS , I can make it easier.
Note: the 17-55Is works better with my 40D than with the 400D because of the new 40DAF system .

Still needing this lens. I picked up the tamron 17-50 to get me by until I had more mad money kicking around. I'll definitely be upgrading before wedding season next year!
The Tamron is as sharp but the IS makes it different , especially for weddings and events .
The Tamorn is a great lens but just not as practical or useful in real life .
With that said, if you are shooting static or slow moving subject in day light , the Tamorn is maybe a better choice since it is so small and cheap.
But my subjects are always moving and need ultimate AF speed , I use my Canon more often, other wise, I would love my Tamorn for its size and close-up feature.
The Tamorn is sharper in macro range or close-up , but the Canon beats the Tamron in infinity range , especially wide open at borders.
The tamorn has a bit more saturated color with warmer cast and I prefer that of my Canon because I like cooler color tone.
The Canon has better CA characteristic and more resistant to flare than the Tamorn.
The Canon has less distortion at its 17mm mark than the Tamorn ...........but the tamorn is definitely wider at its 17mm end than the Canon at its 17mm mark.
I compared the 16-35L of my dad's to my Tmaorn and I found the 16mm of the 16-35L is about the same as my Tamorn at its 17mm.
For landscapes , I like my Tamorn better because of the more saturated Tamorn color and its wider 17mm end, but for people or in door , I definitely use my Canon....
So you may better keep both , I actually have the 17-85IS and 24-105L too .
But I prefer my 17-55IS to all others if I have to sell all others , but with knowing that if I sell them , I will lose some money , I will seep them all .
The Tamron is a great lens for many applications but not for action or street photography since the AF is capricious, or at least I can say it is slow.
I think main questions you need to ask yourself before spending a grand on the Canon are :
1 do you shoot wide open a lot?
2 do you need super fast AF?
3 do you carry a tripod ?
4 do you have time shooting RAw or just have to shoot Jepeg?
If you use RAW only , all color issues of the Tamorn are no problem at all.
And the the distortion of the Tamorn is easily correted when needed it.
But the wide open sharpness is something you can never make up for by shooting RAW .
Actually, to me getting the CanonEF-S17-55IS saved money in the long run because I could sell all my primes in the range : the 50f1.8 and f1.4 , the 28f1.8 , the 35f2 , the 24 f2.8, the 85f1.8 and Sigma 30EX.
Good luck to you and either way , you won't lose any since both are great lenses IMHO.
Take care.

Hi Derek,
Can I ask why you have the 17-55 IS and the 17-85 IS? Obviously the 17-85 has a bit more reach but at 85mm you can only open up to f/5.6 and the 17-55m is f/2.8 throughout the focal length range.

Forgot this any one on the fence between them should read the MR. Castleman review.
As he says , the Canon is more resistant to flares than other F2.8 crop-only kind of lenses.

His reviews are always more detailed than all other reviews on line out there, and he is not biased like others.
So check it out , also read his 40D review.
I think all rebel users should get the 40D,there is a day-and-night difference in AF speed.

Well, I bought this lens about six months ago and I find it amazing to use, I am not experienced with landscape or "wide angle" (I know it isn't really wide on my 20D). However, this lens is just one more reason I will never leave the "1.6 sensor" world (another being "reach" for my birds).

These two shots are from my recent trip to Alberta, the "Three Sisters (f/14, 1/30, ISO 200)" and
Lake Louise (f/11, 1/60, ISO 200).
210569
They are shot using a CP, which I find difficult to master but very useful, especially at high altitude. Any comments are welcome, I am a real rookie at these sort of shots. I also used this lens at a family wedding, good candids and no flash! To me, it is the plastic L.

Forget about the camera; how's that sweet Tele working out? I own a regular American Series (black with maple) but I was severely tempted to spring for this one with the belly carve. I don't recognize the amp, is it a custom low watt similar to a Fender Champ or Deluxe.

As much as I've been tempted by the 5D, I'm loathe to be parted from my 17-55. It's on my 40D almost exclusively and yields very satisfactory results.
The pictures below were taken at the funeral of a close friend's father. I was hesitant at first, feeling like I was intruding on a very private and solemn event, but friends are friends, and I was glad to be there for him. His dad loved classic cars so it was fitting that they came along for the ride.
