Thanks! I really appreciate any comments as I just started photography about a month ago, so I want to keep improving. This lens was a GREAT buy. Definitely get it! I actually just updated that first shot because it was over exposed a little. Looks much better.

Ooooh should be interesting, I was initially looking for a used Sigma but I couldn't find one. After perusing this thread and went for the Canon.

When I do pixel peep, the area of focus isn't sharp. at f2.8 or at f8. Is this normal?

Depends on what you're shooting. If you're shooting some obscure landscape where the leaves/trees are relatively small and looking for sharp fine details... that might not look as sharp as you think it should.

But if you're shooting a portrait of someone, then it should be sharp at 2.8, and extremely sharp at 5.6 and beyond.

Went out yesterday and shot this. I somehow had my aperture at 3.2 which has resulted in an out of focus pier. But I still somehow like it :) I'll be going back to get it right tho :oops:

Sure. It could be a while though - my 24-70 is set to arrive only on the 7th and then I guess it'll take me some practice with the 5DII's AF to get reasonably ok pics worth posting.

Funny, my first thought when I looked at that was "I would have cloned out the truck" but then I started to thinking that (it looks like) the truck just drove up there, off road, and where he would be if he had driven 20' too far.. it literally gave me chills: much more of a response than I would have had if it had been cloned out. I don't think I would have parked that close!

Silckooz, that is great news!!! As one that really battled between the decision of which of the two lenses (finally getting the 17-55), could you please elaborate what do you like better n the 17-55? I'm curious.

I will try to get some shots comparing them over the next week. So far I'm really liking the 17-55 but will have to do more testing.

Both are great lens, going have to decide which one more suited for me. Going do my best to write an in depth review in the coming weeks with lots of photos comparing both.

I will probably be keeping the 17-55 but some need test shots so I can really determine which one works best for me.

I did an interesting thing last Wednesday. I went out and explored some of the old coal mining "ghost towns" of Monroe County, Iowa. Buxton, Iowa had over five thousand people living there when Consolidated Coal Company decided to close down. The people just disappeared...almost overnight. This building housed the explosives used to blast deeper into the tunnels. Notice the double walls. No, it didn't blow up! It has just "weathered" away. The 17-55 did a nice job for me. I made up this postcard in case the chamber of commerce wants to use it for promotional purposes.

Switching to Nikon but don't have my cam yet, this thing and the 100-400mm I'm hanging onto until I have it... Good ol' 17-55mm delivers everytime.

So I just got my 17-55 yesterday, great lens I love it. But when the IS motor starts/ends it makes a weird noise, Is this normal? When I have IS off it doesn't make that weird noise when it starts/ends.

As long as it's a relatively faint "chirp" like sound, then it's normal. And yes, it happens once you activate the shutter button and it stops about 1 seconds after you've let go of the button.

Yes. Should be near-identical (if not exactly identical) sound on both start-up and stop. All IS lenses do it. Some are more quiet than the other. If you ever get a chance to shoot an EF-S 55-250 IS lens (version I), you'll be wondering if little Keebler elves don't live inside your lens. That one has the loudest IS sound I've ever heard on an IS lens. But can't say I've shot that many IS lenses, just:

17-55/2.8
70-200/2.8ii
100-400
100/2.8L is

But that said, the 17-55/2.8is is still the fastest focusing lens in my arsenal.

Thanks! I tested my 15-85 and that lens is silent. I'm guessing because it has a newer IS. I had the 55-250 but never noticed the IS sound that it made. But that was when I first got into photography, and didn't pay much attention to it.

All shots taken with the 17-55 f/2.8 IS which is easily my favorite lens. A single AlienBee B800 with a PLM was used.

I see you have both the 17-55 and the 15-85 lenses. If you could characterize their differences for me.... not the f/2.8 constant, etc... that I understand. I'm more interested in any IQ differences you are seeing. The reason I ask is probably self explanatory. I just purchased a 60D and could only afford one lens to start so I selected a used 15-85. As time goes on, I'll be adding lenses and am wondering if when I have some of the other focal lengths covered, I should consider upgrading to the 17-55.

I shoot a variety of things so I can't single out one thing. I know the f/2.8 will give me more low light capabilities and from the shots on this thread, the IQ is amazing. I guess I'm wondering if the 15-85 is 90% of the IQ, color accuracy, lack of CA, etc when compared to the 17-55 or if there is some other way to measure the differences where it makes sense to me.

Sorry for the wandering post. I hope someone can make sense of my ramblings.

Hey I been so busy lately, my dad bought a new house and I been working on it past 2 weeks with no days off. I don't have much time to do any controlled testing. I'm planning on selling my 15-85 once I get a few test shots, so I can write up a review to help others. I had the same problem when I was choosing my walk around. Went with 15-85 because it was cheaper and the IQ that I saw in threads were amazing.

Today I got go back and help in the after noon, so I will try to get some shots in.
