Ever since I got this lens for my 30D, I've been saying that this lens rocks the world for the smaller sensor class of camera, and pics like this paint the picture just fiiiiiine! Unfortunately, for me at least, I gave this lens to my daughter who is at the Oregon Coast right now and out of touch due to storm-related power outages and where I wasn't even able to drive to because of closed roads, so I can't just rush over and grab that lens and take more pics with it...curses! Foiled again!

definately get 17-55 before 24-105 especially for people, you will LOVE it love it - the f/2.8 makes a huge difference
i have 17-55 and 24-105, i really wanted to get the 70-200 f/2.8 IS but couldnt afford it so the 24-105 was my consolation prize
but i wouldnt exchange my 17-55 for any other lens

About....to....pull....the....trigger.
Must....stop....looking....at....THIS THREAD!
Can't believe I'm about to spend this much money on a lens! Started shooting seriously early this year and I'm about to upgrade my XT and Sigma 17-70 to a 30d and this baby (also got a 70-200 F4 and 430ex on the way). Being a complete tightwad I swore I wouldn't let the upgrade bug get me. This forum is so evil!
When I first started researching (before my XT) I figured the kit lens would be just fine. I found a review of lenses and saw that there was a lens that had just 1mm more at the wide end than the kit for like $1000...I just didn't get it back then .
Damn you all! Can't wait to start posting some pics:D.

The IS, together with real sharpness, is what sets this lens apart. Using this lens indoors, available light, hand-held, is great. Believe me, it makes a world of difference. You will get shots you could never get before. Is that worth the money? Only you can say...

Well, unfortunately I stumbled on this thread while thinking seriously about getting a 24-105. I really wanted the wider range, the 2.8, and was excited by the IS so I switched gears and ordered this lens. I also have the 70-300, so I'm fairly well covered, anyway.
These are the first shots out of the box to play with the IS. I'm pleased.

Yeah - actually I guess they all do. I meant to say that my current walk-around is the Tamron 28-75. The 17-23 bit really got to me, though. I thought I would like the longer reach, but I found myself wanting to go wider. The IS really is really what kicked me over, though, since the Tamron doesn't have it.

I've had this len for maybe two months now. And that, even though I've sticked to buying even L glass. I bought this lens because something about it stood out.
And, guess what? I haven't regretted it -- this lens makes my 30D sing. I look at pics from this lens and it literally brings tears to my eyes because this lens, along with the 10-22, can enable our cameras to "be all that they can be".
So, if you're sitting on the fence about this lens, give it a try, and then post some pics so that we all can share in the joy!

I have come so lcose to clicking the BUY button on a 24-70L, then i changed my mind and decided 99% for the 24-105L ... but now im on the 17-55.
And i think this time im going to stick with this choice.
I know i will miss the 17mm to 24mm and that its 2.8 is a great bonus.

I don't understand why people buy the 24-70 or 24-105 over this if you don't use film, a 5d or a 1ds. I've played with a 24-70 on my 30d and it just isn't wide enough for a walk around lens i think.

Personally I use the 24-105mm on a 1Ds, but have found that it also serves its purposes on 1.3X and 1.6X crop cameras.
On a 30D I found the range and IS incredible for natural light casual wedding shots. It helped me stay out of the way of a main photographer (not using flash means that I didn't cause his exposures to go wonky), and allowed me to catch frame-filling candid images.
But a 17-55mm would indeed be a good lens on a 1.6X crop camera and it'd be at the top of my list if I moved again to such a setup.

Been in this situation for so long. Finally took a deep breath, tested the lens at the shop and swiped the card. No night outs for me in the next 12 months!
Now I know the attached image a so so. But this is at ISO1600 1/15s @ F2.8. I shake like a retired jack hammer operator and I still got the shot! Amazing lens.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words...you added a brief description that makes it worth even more!
A lot of photographers think (conventional wisdom) that a wide angle lens doesn't need IS if they have f/2.8, which is why there have been no lenses featuring this combination...until this lens came out...and this picture is a demonstration that with this lens your camera can get shots that you never could get before!
Booyah for the 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens!

Just posted these in C&C, but thought they deserve to be shown here so I can add my 0.02c. I love this lens for my walkaround shots. Using the IS, I can set my camera and pass it over to my wife/friend to take the shot while I do the assisting. In this case my wife got the shot so I cant even take the credit!

Here are a few of shots: I was out of town recently and came across this little riverside park, and decided to to a walk-around with only the 30D and this lens, with no tripod or monopod (usually not my approach!).
So, these shots are all hand-held with a high enough aperture to get good detail, just to see how good I could get with this lens' IS. I was pretty satisfied:

Think so? I hadn't even thought of a CPL, but then I was going minimalist on this hike -- I didn't even bring a camera bag, I just wanted to check out using the 17-55 on a dim, overcast day in a natural setting. It was all for fun, kind of a point-and-shoot exercise, but I was happy that a few shots came out nicely!

I love this len, just got it today. It was a little late (dark), but took a few to satisty my curiosity and it looked really good. I'm an amateur and when I first bought the XTi w/kit lens, I was disappointed (vs my old G5), then I got the 17-85 and still somewhat disappointed. Then I found this forum and did my reading to find this len, and now I'm ecstatic. The combination of 2.8 and IS are unbelievable, I love this len, very easy to work with and the pics are very sharp. This is the main reason to to get into DSLR. $1K was a bit unsettling at first for somethin' like this, but once it sinks in (and budget allows), I think it's great. Can't say enough about this lens (2.8, IS, and sharpness). LOVE IT!!
