Quick question (may sound dumb, but I'll ask anyways.... :) ): Was the gradient shading in the pics achieved in PP?

At 17mm it does it on its own but on photoshop you can increase it with the RAW editor. Also when I adjust my cruves i usually increase it since I look for a more contrasty look.

Also you could use the burn tool with a large radius and round off your corners. That seems to work effectively.

or in photoshop you could make a new levels layer and make it a bit darker then use the circular gradient tool on the layer mask so that the bulk of the layer mask is transparent.

Here are some shots from the last month taken with my 17-55 (started doing this in early october and just started school). I'm definitely seeing some improvement in my work as I'm getting more comfortable with my camera. Flash was used on the top 4 photos. Any constructive criticism is welcome as well. Thanks everyone!

Looks like I wasn't the only one at an aquarium recently :) Just got done pulling most of my photos from yesterday and they turned out beautiful! I was with two other fellow schmucks with cameras and we've all come to the conclusion that fish are quite hard to take good pictures of! Going from one aquarium to another, the lighting varies vastly and smaller fish tend to stay moving and at a brisk pace. Heres a sample with crop.

Some of my indoor shots at ISO 800 and above seem to be noisy and seeing yours i know that it doesnt have to be, or there is somethign wrong with my lens.
I think i need to play about with it more to test this.

Noise is normally a factor of the body/sensor and not the lens. You may find the noise is visibly worse when underexposed, so try overexposing a stop or two (not to the point of blown highlights though) and adjusting in PP.

I also considered the 24-105, but I wanted to have a "walk-around" lens that I could take solo, without other lenses and the 24-105 would not have been wide enough. I don't mind the overlap at the wide end at all. If I had the 24-105 I would be switching lenses on every other shot!!
The 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens, except the AF is not good for moving targets. The 50mm f/1.4 has a better AF and is a little better optically. I'll probably sell off the f/1.8 now that I have the f/1.4 version.
The 60mm macro is probably my favorite lens....its just awesome - I use it for portraits, landscapes and sometimes even macro. If your even considering it, get it!!
Here's another one taken with the 17-55, taken this past Sunday....

I don't own the 17-55 2.8 but I rented it for two weeks for a trip to Italy. My 17-40L was in the shop and im actually very glad it was. The 2.8 plus IS helped out a great deal in churches, although I am not huge fan of the 17-55 overall. I think its way too much money for what it is. It also gave my 20D quite a few errors while in Italy, I had some random images come out black with no data and the camera would lock up. I loved the range of the lens, it was the PERFECT range for a walk around lens. It also had some glare issues inside the churches that were very unpleasant.
Here is the link to the complete set of images from my Italy trip.

One thing I'd like to know is where is all the flare a few on here (these forums not this thread) complain about?
Hi Grizzy,
Here's an example of how sensitive this lens is to flare:
http://www.pbase.com/hogster/image/86093063/original.jpg
Notice how the fluorescent light has been echoed at the top right of the stage? Ok flare is almost inevitable with something like the sun in a shot, but a fluorescent light?
Also in low-light shots (with long exposures), it doesn't take much light to cause a flare ... stopping down helps, but doesn't completely solve the problem.
I can live with this flaw though as otherwise it's a brilliant piece of glass :)

I've got the hood too ... usually it's not a problem if the bright source of light is outside the frame of the photo, it's mostly when it's inside. I know it's best to avoid having bright light sources in a photo, but sometimes you can't help it, and it's good to have a lens that resists flaring .... unfortunately the 17-55 isn't one of them ;)

OK this won't win any awards for artistic merit but thought I'd post an example of how sharp this lens can be and how well the images respond to a bit of sharpening. First up is a pic I took at lunchtime while I was waiting for a friend to buy some teabags...
This is the whole pic reduced down to 1000x667 pixels.
Next post has 100% crops from the centre of the image.
JoYork
24th of January 2008 (Thu), 19:30

JoYork

On that image it was set to "standard" mode on the 400d. Not sure what the sharpness setting is on that mode, I'd have to check the manual. The images seem to respond well to sharpening even at 100% with this lens.
Some images are slightly soft at the corners if you pixel-peep, but that doesn't worry me too much.

Yup, I suppose it depends on your preferences, though. I found that the 17-55 puts out equal or better photos than the 50mm 1.4 in just about every situation I came across, so I sold the 50mm as it was redundant in my lineup (I did keep my 50 1.8 though). There are times I would like to have f/1.4 at my disposal for days when I'd like to get some cool extreme bokeh effects, but it's rare and I must admit that I prefer something in the 24mm/30mm/35mm range for a prime lens (my indoors is too tight for the 50mm), so I'll probably pick up a Sigma 30mm 1.4 (love that lens, mistakenly sold mine a few months ago) or possibly a 24L or 35L if I can talk my wife into that expensive of a birthday present! :D
On a sidenote, I'm a pure amateur and don't shoot for money, so it's tough for me to justify having redundant focal lengths in my zooms/primes.....however....I am STILL going to try for one of the L's for a birthday present!

The L's are really nice, but don't get too hung up on them like I did. It's really true when people advise to buy what you need and not what you think you want. There's a difference. I wasted a lot of cash doing just that (although I'm glad I had that learning experience and know what's available). It's tough though because the L's are designed for the full frame bodies and it makes it difficult to find the "right" focal lengths for crop bodies IMHO.

ALaS...I like the DOF of that top one!
Brad...I agree that the build 'feel' of the 17-55 doesn't match that of any L lens I've owned (which has been a whopping total of 6 so far), but as long as I have a crop camera, I'll probably have the 17-55 and just hope that what feels like inferior build quality (compared to L's) doesn't actually cause any physical problems with my copy....so far so good! Though I must admit, the 24-70 would be very tempting if I convinced my wife to get me a 10-22 for my Bday.. :)

Top tip: DON'T leave things on the top of your car before driving off!! I accidentally left this expensive dictaphone in a carrying pouch (also containing two AAA batteries) on the roof of my car before driving off to an event where I intended to use it.
On arrival I couldn't find it! I called home and my parents found it in the road, crushed! You can see the damage caused by the loose AAA batteries in the photo of the back of the unit. The case is tough aluminium so it's survived surprisingly well – you could still play all the previously-recorded audio files! Although the external microphone had stopped working, you could still record perfectly well using the internal microphone! If that's not testament to this unit's build quality I don't know what is! I wouldn't recommend performing this test yourself on any of your equipment though!
Having said this, for my purposes, without the screen it wasn't going to be much use anymore .... Ah well, lesson learnt, the hard way!

another time years ago i left my cellphone on the boot and went on the motorway... as i was driving i realised i didnt have it and started feeling all around me on the floor, pockets etc... when i looked up into the rear view mirror i saw my phone sitting there on the boot, wedged against the spoiler! PHEW - something to be said for having an old fat cellphone LOL
and here's an idea for a really amusing stunt: get a baby capsule and tie it to the roof of the car, then put blankets etc in as though it contains a baby... and drive around town
you will probably end up on the news LOL
