Just curious, what type of sharpening are people doing before being happy to show their photos (in-camera, unsharp mask, other?) love to see some before and after shots. Especially at F2.8.
Cant decide if I need to send mine to Canon

I'll do some 100% crops later. I find the lens needs a little sharpening if you're going to pixel peep, but the detail is definitely there in the first place, it just needs a little coaxing.

That pretty much sums it up. Compared to my kit lens and 70-200 F4 they need little sharpening to shine, but the 17-55 shots sometimes look blurred until sharpening is added in ps. Is this typical for the lens?
btw - Not pixel peeping these are after reducing to 1024.

I got mine right towards the end of the year last year (2007), and that was after checking at least twice a day on stock status at B&H. I added myself to the auto-notify when in stock list, and I have yet to receive the e-mail. My point: watch the B&H site very, very closely and be ready to hit BUY as soon as you see it in stock. I recall the lens going back to out of stock status within 24h of placing my order...
Good luck!

Hey guys, i just got my 17-55 today. Do you feel that lens if fast enough for indoor/dimly lit portrait photos? I'm really considering selling my 50mm 1.4 due to the overlap and picking up an external flash instead to pair with the 17-55 and 40D set-up.
Any advice?

I think for still portraits it is good, but for moving kids it is not, at least without a flash.

Tareq,
This lens is an "empowering" lens, that is, if you are using a "1.6 crop" body, it empowers you to get shots that you otherwise would not be able to get, and with great IQ.
Since it's a lens that is dedicated to the APS-C crop cameras, some thought should be given as to whether you would totally migrate to a "full frame" body. But, for many of us, if we have a crop body we want to get the most use from it and, if we get a full frame body, we will likely keep the crop body. If not, the 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens should have a great resale value.

I am not sure if i am happy that i didn't get this lens as i went to larger sensors [1.3x and full frame], or feel sad that i didn't get this lens before i upgrade as i got 10-22 which is EF-s as well.

I guess it's right and proper to show the flaws of this lens too.
This is a shot of Battersea power station in London taken at 5:30am in very low light taken with a 400D ISO 200 f/2.8 28mm 1/5 sec handheld. Note the vignetting at f/2.8 (which I left in as I think it adds to the period feel of the b&w image)
That said this lens has no such problems at f/4 onwards and the fact that I could get a sharp handheld shot of a distant object at 28mm & 1/5 sec illustrates the real strength of this lens in low light. I could have gone to f/4 and upped the ISO but vignetting can be removed in PP much easier than noise.
As for flare, well I haven't had issues with this lens.
Cool shot...waiting to see the pig float by!! :D

I did a search on this thread for the phrase '17-40' to see if there would be much (if any) conversation about how this lens compares to the 17-40 F/4L. I currently own the 17-40L and was trying to weigh whether it is worth upgrading to the 17-55. Obvious positives are: opening up to 2.8, IS, and adding 15mm to zoom range.
The positives that I see with my current 17-40L are: L-quality glass, metal body, and weather-resistant sealing. I've had this lens for a while now and it's my main lens. I have no major gripes with it but I've recently upgraded to the 70-200 2.8L IS and am really seeing the benefit of 2.8 and IS.
Do you think it is worth selling the 17-40 based on what I laid out above?
tonylong

I haven't owned the 17-40, so I can't compare things like IQ and AF between the two. I believe that the 17-40 was designed as an ultra-wide angle for full frame bodies but many 5D owners are going for the newer 16-35 f/2.8, which is what I've gone for.
For 1.6 crop cameras, I've used the 17-55 f/2.8 IS and I'm convinced it's the finest lens made for those cameras, at least for normal, walk-around, and casual limited-light settings. The IQ is great, and the IS is very slick, and I was impressed, even though I long ago stopped buying EF-S lenses. Not an L, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it at the core of a camera system!

i agreee. never owned the 17-40 but i did used it a couple times on a crop body, definitely a nice lens but was a bit short. the 17-55 is not that much longer but with 2.8 and IS, it makes for a better lens on a crop body. id only get a 17-40L if i had a FF :D

Tareq, I own both lenses at this moment. I originally had the 17-55 and recently picked up the 24-70 during the rebates. I find them pretty close optically. I haven't used my 24-70 enough to make a final judgement.
My 17-55 Positives over the 24-70(brick):
1.) 17-55 has IS. Great for low light hand held shots
2.) Lighter
3.) Wider (17 vs 24 on crop camera).
My 17-55 Negatives over the 24-70(brick)
1.) Not enough reach
2.) Crop body only
3.) Build quality isn't the same as the brick
So to me, each one has a use, but since you have the 24-70, what potential benefits can you gain by picking up the 17-55?

i will never buy 17-55, i was j/kng, i have my 24-105 which is very similar to 17-55 [equiv. 27-88 on 35mm] so i think i don't need it, just because all owners here seems they are happy with it and they got amazing results thats making me to think if i just got it to test it only not to be a main or must lens.

I bought this lens last year to shoot a friends wedding but hadn't really touched it much after that. However, it was too good a lens to even think of letting it go so when I went out to the Fringe last night I took it along to test it out in the dark. Converted from RAW using DPP, resized and sharpened in Elements 5.
All taken with the 30D @ 2.8. These first two had an ISO setting of 400
1) War Memorial here in Adelaide

2) Closer view of the angel
http://photographicpassion.net/web_posting/_MG_3199.jpg
These next two had an ISO setting of 1600. Allong one of our main roads in the city there is a light display running called "Northern Lights" where they paint certain buildings with light. They were amazing, and the place was packed. The lights remain on the buildings for about 10 minutes and then they change to a different display, resulting in 5 different displays per building.

I just pulled the trigger on this lens 5 minutes ago. I'm selling my 24-70L to pay for it :) Found I wasn't using the long end of it, and the 24 isn't wide enough. And the IS will be a bonus, along with the weight for travel.

What's everyone's experiences of using this lens for landscapes etc?
I find it's pretty sharp when focusing on things within about 20 feet or so but so far I've not had much happiness shooting landscapes. I'm sure my technique is largely to blame, but I've seen some amazing landscape pics from the 17-40L but not so many from this lens.
Opinions? Is it a sharpness issue, a colour and contrast issue, or just me? :)
(probably the latter)

I think this lens is a tick down on contrast from the 17-40L, so I sometimes have to post process my RAWs a bit more. Else good ligthing always makes this lens look like any of my L's. Cloudy or poor lighting is when I'm most disappointed in this lens, but I have to admit the same was true of my old 17-40L as well.

that's a really tough ?
my 24-70 gave me great sharp crisp photos - but like above said i was finding the 24 wasn't wide enough on my crop body. The size was actually a huge factor for me since i'm very petite. Too many pictures had blur due to myself and not holding the camera steady enough without IS. The 17-55 is a great choice for me. But the 24-70L was also a very nice piece of glass. It's a really really tough decision and you'll find quite a few posts debating them both!

I've shot both on the 30D, I like the 17-55mm more. Seeing that you have a longer tele you won't miss 70mm as much as you will likely miss the 17-35mm band of this EFS lens.
With hoods in place the 17-55 is significantly smaller and lighter then the 24-70L as well. So I think it's easier to balance as well. This lens made its debut with the 30D, they are a very good matched set.

By the end of this mont the shot will be one year old. It is a right beside a bridge a pass every day on my way to work. Monday that week I saw the sun rising and all the mist doing fun stuff, it took until thursday, if I remember right, until I brought my camera and tripod and set the alarm clock an hour earlier.
I plan to retake the shot, early in the morning, when all the greens have leaf. I live in Sweden and that may be like 1-2 am ....
