I think that the timing turned out about right. The sun was just starting to come over the hills. An hour later or less and it would have looked totally different.

Hi Everyone-

I thought I'd contribute to this thread with a picture from my brand spankin' new 17-55 hehehe...! Although, I'll really miss my Sigma 17-70; it has very close IQ to this lens from my test shots.

Sorry for the typical animal portrait...

On this photo, she was flashed bare bulb on ETTL settings. I may have lowered the FEC because I took a bunch of my kids during the same time. The exposure was at 1/6 @ f/16, as you can see her right ear flapping in the wind. I think I braced the camera on my knee.

Graduated Neutral Density Filters apply a darkening to one edge of a filter, graduating to clear on the opposite edge, commonly applied to landscape-type scenes where a bright sky could cause a shot to underexpose the foreground.

Circular Polarizers are filters that, when rotated, apply a varying amount of a polarizing affect, which can filter out glare from reflected sun as well as give some boost to certain colors, such as blue in the sky and green in plants. It also will lower the exposure of your pic depending on rotation, typically from one to two stops.

These are both different from UV "protective" filters.

First of all...VERY nice picture here! Thank you for posting your pictures! I am new to this forum... I am dying between this 17-55 is and 17-40L! First i notice the 17-55 picture looks very sharp at close distance but it got build issue: DUST....and its so EXPENSIVE:rolleyes: The 17-40L most people use it for landscape, better build, and is a "L"! My collection now are 40D, 70-200mm F4 IS (dont hate;)!) and the 17-85mm IS. My plan is to sell the 17-85mm and getting either the 17-55is($1000) or 17-40L($650) I like Quality(17-40L) and Sharpness(17-55is) Money is not really a big issue but the price are so far apart making me thinks! what should i do guys please help this newbie!

Cheer!

Happy Shooting!

17-40 is a nice lens, but doesn't have IS and is f/4. If you only plan to shoot outdoors then the 17-40 would probably be all you need, but the 17-55 is superb for indoor work (especially if you visit museums where the 2.8 and IS are essential). If money's not an issue, go with the 17-55.

Welcome to the forum by the way :)

Haha, you are in a bias thread here... I'm sure everyone here went through the same dilemma. If you throw on a high quality UV, it should solve your dust problem as it has done with me. For myself, IS is the best feature because it will give you a whole lot more keepers than non-IS, unless you want to use a monopod or tripod for most of your shots. Good luck on your selection!

Welcome to the Forums, MinhThien!

I agree with JoYork, too -the 17-55mm IS is great indoors. Check out this thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=478781

I shot in a museum, in very low light conditions, no flash, all handheld at f/2.8

As for filter choices, you can go with wither Hoyas or B+Ws; I have a Hoya on mine.

And yes, Linkzi is correct -you are in a bias thread! :D

And to think I was pretty much 100% on the 24-70 F/2.8L but am really considering the 17-55 f/2.8 IS now. . .

There would be an incredible overlap for me and I'd most likely sell off my 17-40 F4L & 28-135 IS. I have a 70-200 F4L & have been thinking about upgrading to the 70-200 F/2.8L, this might be a major lens replacement period for me. . .

Look on top edge of your picture, a bit above the pagoda looking structure, there's a dark round spot -that's dust, or as other call it here, "sensor snot"!:)

as Photo_Rebel pointed out, right at the top edge, nearly straight above the Pagoda is a grey spot - that looks like sensor dust to me. Looks large enough to perhaps be taken care of by the built-in clean from your sensor, however.

To be honest, This thread really hasn't made me want to buy the 17-55. I've already got it, but compared to like the 24-70L archive, we're slackin' off! Maybe it's because more, "pros" own the 24-70L?

Ditto. I'm an browing that forum as well and all images are sharp as! :p

Might just cough up for a 24-70.

Here's a sample of the colors this lens can produce. This is the only area in which this lens falls short of L lenses. Still pretty good though.

I checked out the 24-70 archive ... and I think this thread's at par with that one. :)

Hi guys, planning of getting this lens, but I browsed all the 65 pages and saw some soft images (maybe it's just my eyes or no-one wants to comment on the soft photos)?

More pics without PP please. :p

Found soft images at the 24-70 archive as well.
If you look at the exif of the soft images in this thread, they're at 1/10 shutter speed. Try that with a 24-70, you'll see that the images was actually good in comparison. :p :)

I managed to catch a break on this lens yesterday afternoon...
There's a pawn shop near where I live... I take the dog that way once or twice a week, and always peek through the window to try to take a look at what's in there... I just happened to walk by with the dog and the wife, so I made her wait outside while I took a quick peek. Sitting there was a 17-55 2.8 with a sign that said "Kit Lens - $140"
Had to look twice. Then asked to see it just to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me. Then I took it home. Haven't played with it much, but I can tell you that it seems to work just fine!
I didn't even try to haggle with the pawn shop guy...

Nice shot Bill :) Your setup is pretty similar to mine!

Did you use a neutral density filter to achieve a long exposure in such bright conditions? Or did you just stop it down a lot?
