Taken this weekend. All hand held with ISO up to 1600. I was part of a motorcycle event where we took our bikes on top of the aircraft carrier Lexington.

A few pages back, someone asked for photos "with no PP" from this lens. Here's one that nearly qualifies.
http://www.smugmug.com/photos/303546781_vRWtH-O.jpg

I say "nearly qualifies" because it is converted from RAW using DPP. If I recall correctly, settings began with the 400D's "Faithful" picture style, and in-camera sharpening (and hence the sharpening applied by DPP) was set to zero.

ISO 200, f/4, 1/200s. 40mm on a 400D. If I'd been more familiar with the equipment at that time, I would have bumped the ISO setting to 400 and stopped down to f/8 or f/10. Even as shot, though, the lens captured tremendous detail. Two 100% crops below, each one taken from the DPP-generated jpeg using Photoshop. No sharpening applied.

Thanks :)

I started messing around with HDR about 2 weeks ago. I don't like the overly-processed HDR stuff.

Here's a couple more from today, both were processed from a single RAW file (unlike the above which was processed from 3 different exposures)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3271/2552906395_6a1d3bda46_o.jpg

They are a lot closer to what my eye saw at the time, I think. They look a lot flatter and more drab when processed normally.

By far this is my favorite and most used lens. Love this for hiking. For me, it elminates having to bring a tripod allong. I can take small aperture shots with IS if needed, and then switch up to some shallow DOF shots. Here's a few shots from a recent hiking excursion...

Not really sure David, but to me most other shots in this archive look much better. I got the 10-22 at the same time and that seemed to be sharper then the 17-55 which I would think should be the other way around. Maybe I am expecting too much though.

For other photos like the one you posted, which have a large depth of field, you might want to try stopping your lens down from f/2.8. That will make more of the scene appear sharp.

I did take shots immediately after in the same spot at different apertures up to 5.6 but this was the sharpest out of the bunch I thought. Maybe I'm just being too picky but had hoped for somewhat better IQ straight out of the camera.

I would use f/8 or f/11 for that type of scene. At f/5.6 you still may be getting some of the scene OOF depending on what you focused on.

That said, at f/4 and above my 17-55 is deadly sharp. At 2.8-4 it's very, very good. I'd say image quaility is on par with my 10-22.

Looks like the weather should work out good for you!

I use a B+W MRC 010 UV filter on mine. From what I have read, as long as you use a nicer filter with a multi-reflective-coating, you should be good to go. There's a UV filter thread in the lens forum with some good info, if you're up for a read.

I actually bought that same UV filter with the lens and put it on just seconds after taking the lens out of the box. I also got the top of the line Hoya CPL so I can interchange the two filters between the 17-55 and 10-22. The 10-22 is a downright blast to use.

flareak - would also be interested to know if you used any filters with that, that sky has such a punch!

Super Bee - Did you use a filter on the second one for the sky? ...

Cheers :)

Thanks. Yeah, IS does its job nicely. I wish I had tripod too though.
TIP: The best time to shoot fireworks is at the very begining. After some fireworks shots, there is smoke everywhere. I was little late and had some really nice smoked shots. :)

I have not used any filters with this lens yet. I got it just 2 days ago and am still waiting for some sun in the sky. I might be wrong, but to me it doesn't feel like filters are going to hold the dust off. There are plenty entry points for the dust to get in apart from the front of the lens.

I had not even heard of shooting this way before. I'm quite impressed by the idea. I did the same thing, but without a card board, just two shots combined in Photomatix pro 3, same result ... maybe not as clean as yours though. The lens is 10-22.

Guys, just received my 17-55 for the XTi. Looks like a good lens. Zoom ring seems to be a bit tight. Is this normal?
I also got a hood and a filter for the same, to prevent the dust issue.

I want to check if it is safe enough to keep the filter on while storing it in the bag. That ways i wont ever be using the lens front cap. Is this a safe practice?

Yes, the stiffness of the barrel is normal and will loosen with time. As for storing the lens with only the filter on... I don't know. You normally get a filter to protect the front element. But you also don't want to get the filter scratched, or else IQ will be affected. Why not put the lens cap ON the filter?

Jethro790
8th of July 2008 (Tue), 21:39
What will protect your filter? You did get a high quality filter, yes? Although I don't typically use a filter on this lens due to flaring issues, I do on my 10-22 and always use the lens cap. Those B+W F-Pro filters aren't cheap.

I only have 1.6 crop DSLR, so I can't say anything about the 16-35L mkI in the
full frame corners, but as for performance on 1.6 crop:

a) The 17-55IS is sharper at every aperture.
b) The 16-35L mkI has more pleasing color performance.
c) The build quality of the L is obviously superior, but that's not a huge deal to me.
d) The additional zoom range of the 17-55IS is very nice to have on a walkaround lens.
e) The 17-55IS has quite noticeable vignetting at f/2.8, but this is easily corrected in DPP if you shoot RAW. It is quite useably sharp at f/2.8
f) The 16-35L mkI is fairly soft wide open at 35mm.
g) Both can take fine photos.

See my comparision page for some full size images with both lenses:

Color was very good, and overall image quality very nice, but not quite as sharp
as the 17-55IS. It is still a beautiful lens, and would be my walkaround on a
full frame camera. The bokeh on the 24-70L is special.

Well my 70-200 is sharper, but the 17-55 is pretty good. I've started to shoot mainly RAW now and the 17-55 really seems to benefit from some smart sharpening - seems to bring back lots of detail.

Can anyone tell me if the hood is designed to fit on the lens backwards when not in use? I had a bit of a play but can't get it to hold on and I don't want to force it in case I scratch my brand new lens...especially if it's not supposed to go on like that. First day of shooting with it tomorrow so hope to have something to contribute to the archive soon.:D

LOVED that first shot of little Ava..adorable! My nephew had more rolls than that and by the time he was three he had lost it all. We used to call him the Michelin Tyre man too and joked that it was hard to tell with roll was his elbow! She is an adorable baby and I let out an AWWWWW!!!! when I saw that pic. theres two dots on the hood: the filled-in one is the one you line up with the red dot on the lens when the hood is in use, and 90 degrees around, the hollow circle is the one you line up with the dot on the lens when it is reversed

make sure it's on level then twist clockwise til it clicks

you are talking about the genuine canon hood arent you? initially i bought a much cheaper 3rd party hood but it didnt fit right and wasnt very solid when it was on - also it took a while to actually get it to go on. so that went back and i got the real thing.
