dave92270,
Thanks for post.
I'm heading out west to visit a bunch of national parks and there aren't many 17-55 landscape shots out there. I've been toying with the idea of renting a 16-35 or 17-40 to use for the trip.

well, you may want to get the 17-55 for the trip, works nice as a "single" lens for me so far; if you'll shoot landscapes, every once a while you'll want the extra zoom capability that the lens offers over those 2 focal lengths you mentioned, plus the IS feature allows you to shoot handheld at smaller apertures/slow speeds (for some DOF) so you don't necessarily need to haul the tripod all the time. I don't care much about f/2.8 (because shooting landscapes) however this fairly fast aperture helps to achieve more accurate and faster AF performance (on 40D at least it does, or is supposed to), plus the benefit of brighter viewfinder. I used to have 17-85 and switched to 17-55 for wide angle performance - 17-85 was disappointing at wide end while 17-55 works well accross the whole focal lenght range; hardly any chromatic aberrations (in-camera jpegs are definitely possible) and frames are sharp all the way to the corners...

I recently borrowed this lens from a friend and I have to say I was very impressed with the results of it. It was very nice of him to let me use it, but also bad since now I might just have to pick one up and trade up from my Siggy 17-70mm http://www.tlzone.net/forums/images/smilies/headbang.gif Well I will add one pic so I can venture back to this thread from time to time....

I recently purchased a 24-70 f/2.8L, I must say the extra width of the 17-55 for my style of shooting comes in handy and the IS is a plus. Colors seem to be better with the L however, you can never win I guess.

The colors on the 17-55 are usually cooler than L glass. A slight nudge on the Temp slider can fix it if you desire.

Got to say I'm impressed with the IS on this lens. This shot tells me two things, first I need to clean my keyboard, second the IS rocks. This was a 1/2 second exposure at 55mm f/2.8 with focus achieved by liveview (focused on the buttons at the back). 1/2 second hand held and its reasonably sharp. Nice.

Will try to upload some more later :)

Sounds like a good price! :) FYI, having a filter on the front will not stop dust entering the lens ... it enters between the zoom ring and the inner lens barrel (the volume of the lens increases when you zoom in, so air has to get into the lens somehow). Personally I haven't had a dust problem with my 17-55 whatsoever and I've had mine since Sept 2007 ... others haven't been so lucky.
The bottom line though, is that unless you have a LOT of dust in the lens, you won't notice any image degradation in your image - it's nowhere near as important as having dust on the sensor.
Hope this helps :)

We do leave his cage opened but he chooses not to fly around.. he just sorta sits on the top and hangs out there.
He loves sitting on shoulders; anyone's! He was bred and raised by humans so he's very comfortable around us.
See how happy he is?

Hey Ericson, glad to know the 17-55 is still serving you well. :D I checked out your self-portrait shots. They are freaking awesome, you have to give me some tips sometime. Do you use a remote? Or do you just stop down the lens, do a 10 sec countdown, run to the seat and wait for the shutter?
