A 17mm lens is a 17mm lens no matter what format. The effective field of view stated in 35mm terms, when used on an EF-S camera, will be roughly 28mm.

Here are some shots from the last month taken with my 17-55 (started doing this in early october and just started school). I'm definitely seeing some improvement in my work as I'm getting more comfortable with my camera. Flash was used on the top 4 photos. Any constructive criticism is welcome as well. Thanks everyone!

Hooray!, I just got my 17-55 back from Canon. If anyone followed, I sent a complaint about my lens dust issue. A little while later, I sent in my lens demanding a free clean. Which they did. And now, it has come back, and it's like new. Maybe even better than new. Seems like they tidied up the zoom ring, and my images seem contrast, sharper. I have reason to believe the dust is coming from the front, so now I have a Heliopan filter slapped on.

settings, oh jeez, lots of experimenting since the light was ever changing...waaaay too many red lights too which explains most of the b&w's!
manual, no flash, iso either 800 or 1600 (probably too high now that I think back) aperature between 2.8 and 4, and shutter speeds from 1/40 to 1/160.

Here're some pics from a recent trip. I was most impressed with the performance of this lens, contrast and colour wise (these are straight from the cam, with just cropping, I think) - especially the flower pic, which I was suprised - I would not normally use this lens for flower/macro shots!
I *think* it is still picking up dust, but not sure.

Wow really nice shots Erik. You know it showed me something. They're right, it doesn't have the rich saturation. Instead, it produced vibrant, natural colors that are true-to-life. Which is even better for us, because we can have both worlds if we want, with a simple click in PS we can turn out natural colors into vibrant ones, but honestly, I'm starting to like the natural look more and more.

Thanks man. :D:D

Nice shot. Definately need more! Think about it. Myself included. we praise this lens to no end. I severely wish I kept it, just to show what it could do in the hands of a complete amateur. I mean if I were trying to be persuaded towards the 17-55, this thread definately wouldn't be enough to move in the slightest! That said, awesome pictures, but we definately a lot more in here.

Why would anyone possibly buy a lens based on a shots that have been edited and put on the web.
I defy anyone to tell the difference between a shot taken by a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and a Canon 17-55IS posted here (unless IS was a major part of getting the shot)

Hold on, i didnt include the kit lens. As fantastic as it is its not f/2.8.
I have both the Tamron and Canon and both are very fine lens's. IQ is almost the same and with a bit of PP you cant tell the difference.
The point i was trying to make (and has been stated by others) is that its the person taking the photo that makes it, the lens is only a tool to aid this. and i would imagine every shot posted here has had PP done to it, and then reduced in size so it looks even sharper. Take this away and it could have been shot by any "good" f/2.8 lens
All IMHO of course

Here's a couple I found on my office PC...taken last year during a trip to Canada.
Nothing special.
Both shots handheld.
First shot was inside a pretty dark church. IS definitely came in handy.
On the second shot you notice that the while the IS comes in handy, it doesn't stop motion, as can be seen on the right hand corner with blurred image of people walking. (Though I like this effect to some degree...)

The 24-70 was amazing. I loved everything about it. However, I remembered just how great the 17-55 was. It's definately sharper, but that may be due to newer tech. The colors I might have been a bit over dramatic. I just bump the saturation in photoshop or use a polarizer. I do miss it, and I can't wait to get it back. The 17-55 is definately "a keeper."

It was developed in 1938 and went into service in 1940. The 307 was the civilian counterpart to the WWII B-17 "Flying Fortress" used extensively in Europe.
I made this shot with 30D and 17-55MM EF-S IS last Saturday at the Air & Space Museum Annex at Dulles Airport near Washington, DC

Because it's an EF-S lens. No EF-S lenses are designated as L's, even though they might be optically as good if not better than some L's.

Ya I would say this lens deserves the L label... and the reason it doesn't, as stated above is that it is an EF-S mount. Either way I think this lens will be staying with me for quite some time.

should be expecting my lens either tomorrow or sat and im still deciding whether i should go for a B&W MRC filter or Hoya super pro1 filter.
the B&W filter is a lot more expensive though
my mate has the Hoya super pro1 attched to his and has had great results

yeah thats the filter my mate has. i think if i end up purchasing that then i would just leave it on all the time. is there a reason why you dont keep it on all the time, do you notice a difference with shots with and without it?
ErikM
12th of April 2007 (Thu), 14:03
No I don't really notice any difference BUT I figure why put a $50 piece of glass in front of a $2000 piece of glass? If the conditions call for it (mud, sand, snow, rain etc etc) then I break out the filters right away but if all is calm or I am inside off the filter comes :D
I have also found that I get better results when shooting indoor hockey WITHOUT a filter... IMO :D
