Hey guys, well i finally got sick of seeing him and not having my camera. so i waited by the lake today and he showed up like clockwork. Friendly fella too, walked right by me without a care. heck i had to back up just to get his head in the frame! all taken with 20D and 400 5.6

Later on i found him on the other side of the lake (where all the birds seem to congregate in some nearby mangroves) and he was taking a bath. something i dont recall ever seeing a heron do.

Nice series and i can only see 3 images and thats after refreshing several times on 2 of the red X's. The 3rd image is my favourite for the action and the way the bird looks in this image. I will check later to see if the 4th shot comes up.

The fourth one came up right away this time ...great capture. I had to right click on the first 2 X's though to finaly get them up.

I use Pbase as well and i love it as a storage and viewing area for my photographs but I subscribe to Photobucket to upload to this and another forum....100% every time for more than a year now and that is all I use it for. Perhaps Image Shack is similar. For all its great points I have heard and seen on several occasions that Pbase is not as reliable for links like these.

I especially like the third picture with the fish just being captured. Good timing. Looks like it caught some kind of darter.

I would be mighty proud to have taken shots like these Billy, the focus, aperture, exposure look spot on. The colours are gorgeous, well done.

To coin a local phrase, they're boss! I love the angle on the second one. How big is this heron?

Billginthekeys

actually. thats one of the surpising things about this bird. you might expect it to be large, buts its really no where near the size of a great egret or great blue heron. Its larger than a snowy, but still a smaller bird for a heron.

Thanks for that - it does look huge, that is why I asked.

they are also one of the best and most meathodogical hunters ive seen. i was watching him one day, and saw him pluck a moth out of mid air, that was a sight. hes very timely aswell. he shows up on the same section of the lake every day at about 11:30 and stays until hes had enough to eat or gets scared off, and goes back to the place where i caught him bathing. very interesting habits ive noticed after watching him for a few weeks.
