Does anyone know where to buy the same battery that comes with the camera? From what I've seen on Amazon and other sites is that there is an H version which has a longer life per charge . Has anyone tried alternative batteries? Is it true that the battery that comes with the S400 not the same as the aftermarket versions?

I have an extra battery which is not Canon's. I'll look up wht it is.... it says on the back "Fits Canon NB-1LH" 3.7v Li-ion 850mAh
Works vey well with my IXUS 400. I'll have to see if I still have the original wrapping.....
My brother bought me the camera as a present through the Internet. I'll see if I can track down the info for you....

I bought mine at this site http://www.sterlingtek.com/ln04-canon-nb-1l-dlc1l.html for $ 8.99 and is working fine. It is also higher capacity, so it should give you more shots per charge.
good luck. 8)

I bought two 3.7V, 1200 mAh batteries off ebay for about $15 total. They give you about 1-1/2 times more shots-per-charge, and I have yet to have any problems with them.

well, just found the wrapping. No real brand, it has written Digital Camera battery for NB1LH and nothing else.
Was bought at a French site, Nomatica, http://www.nomatica.com/

Platinum,..
You don't mention where you are located,. but in the US I have four of these;
http://www.thomas-distributing.com/maha_lithium_rechargeable.htm
And they are great performers.
I word of warning,. the first time i charged one of the batteries,. it's charge lasted very breifly,. after exhausting it,. I let it recharge overnight,.. and now I have been shooting on the same cahrge for weeks!!!!!!!! (no I'm not kidding)
I am not used to using the slow as molasses chargers that Canon bundled with this camera,. so be forwarned,. let these batts charge LONG after the light turns green for a full charge.
P.S... my Batts cost about $28.00 which I thought was pretty good,. but I would definately try those Sterlingteks for under $10.00 each!

I was told NB-1L = NB-1LH
AND I FOUND:
cheapest original NB-1LH 1100mAh
$22.9 free shipping !!!
http://sonyhp.com
cheapest generic $8.9
http://sterlingtek.com
I Bought one from each of the site:
The original shots 1.35 hour and 250 shots.
The aftermarket shots 1.4 hours and 260 shots.
They looks the same at the start, still trying more cycles....
