I tried to update my 10D's Firmware but in the middle of the process, I received an error message. When I tried to redo the instalation, my camera stays dead.... nothing I've done would start trn the camera. Any easy fix or am I SOL?

Welcome to the forum, sorry on such a tragic note. How many shutters do you think the camera has performed. Only thing I can think is: take out the batteries, including the date/time one. Wait a few minutes and try again. If its still dead, take it in for an estimate or time to upgrade

This lockup response of the Camera is published by Canon. Usually occurs when user error does not execute the update protocol exactly correct, had a low battery at the time, shut off too soon, took card out too soon, etc.
The electronics lock up. I believe it is on Canon's web site. I believe recommendation is to send/bring camera to Canon Service Center. In the USA, they frequently restore these user caused error problems for free (for CPS members), but I do not know where you are located. Sounds like camera is off for a vacation to Canon... Jack

I agree. This has happened to a number of people when upgrading their firmware. Canon can fix it for sure, but the battery reset is worth an attempt.

Yeah, that's a drag. I've had my 10D for over 2 years and outside of way overdue for a good cleaning, shutter check and any necessary calibration for focus, etc., I imagine I'm on borrowed time. it has served we well and I have taken some really nice shots with it. Now I have a new 30D and can take the wear and tear off the 10D and keep it as a backup katt:cool:

It doesn't work..... :( I doubt I'd get the camera back before Thanksgiving even if I overnight it to Canon. Maybe I should do an "upgrade" to 20D or just say f-ed it and go with Nikon? If staying with Canon... where could I get a quick deal on maybe a 20D or better camera?

well what lens and other eq do you have that canon? I have a 20D and it's a great camera. Send the 10D in to canon. If you have the money get a 20 or 30 D and when the 10D comes back all new keep it as a back up or sell it. I am sure that many people would buy it.

Due to time, could I get a cliff note version of which one is better: 20 or 30D and why?

Image quality the same.
20D will be cheaper if you can find one
30D has bigger LCD, spot-metering, and picture styles

I have no preference between them.

Same stuff that's on the 5D and 1Dmklln ...different 'template' options for in-camera processing. We've never bothered using them, so can't help you with whether it's a plus or not.

Picture styles??? What's that?

basically parameters that affect the shot (like contrast etc)

you can personalize it yourself
