Olivia Newton-John @ Penn's Peak, Jim Thorpe, PA...11.01.06

Olivia Newton-John, sings oldies but goodies and newest releases to a full house of applauding fans...the show lasted well into the evening...I was able to get these photos from my front row seat, while singing and applauding too... The lighting was real tricky, with large spot lights, color stage lights and custom set light beams, constantly moving and changing colors.
Please advise on post processing of these trimmed pics.

That's a good eye, there Narlus...Thanks for the feed back...
i might just switch it out with another image for best presentation...I'll end up matting the best ones and framing and hanging them up at home as usual...

Some singers are real hard to catch with their eyes open.

I like 5 and 7 best.

Nice work!

Thanks for the critique Curtis,

It was a matter of choosing the most representative photos of a very beautiful woman... approx. 50/50 of the photos of Olivia Newton-John, were with open eyes...based on lighting, under exposure and over exposure, I decided to include an equal balance of both...

Nice set, John. Would be nice to get a wide angle shot in there. If I get too many from this angle I get criticized for "shooting up the nose" ... but when the nose is this pretty what's the difference? :-)

Holy cr*p, she's still singing... Good to see that! Does she have a schedule online somewhere?

Ironically, NBC's "Dateline" had a story on her ol' boyfriend Patrick McDermott last night.

Nice shots.

#4 is the nuts. #5 is nice but I think it would look better with cropped the spotlights out.

oh Sandy, baaaaaaabbyyyyy!

Thanks Dwight, your feed back is always appreciated...

That wide angle shot is escaping me lately...I would have to stand up from the front row, and walk back in front of the entire audience to get the shots...I'm considering the 24mm 1.4L for that purpose...however, it's the cash flow that will determine that...

I knew, "the up the nose" item would come up...you brought it up in a previous thread post or two...I was hoping to get some feed back, actually from you, regarding the up the nose deal... It was a last minute judgment call to include that photo...Of course, there is no harm with a pretty nose, this time only...

Tonight, I should bring back a good set of photos of Travis Tritt...since it's a country act with a guy on stage, I could probably sneak back, for a cup of coffee and a few wider shots...

Dynamite voice...She hit every high note right on target, and sustained the notes for a very long time, just as if she's twenty years old...She's an absolute pro at what she does...a Great Show...

Check under "Tour Info" at:
http://olivianewton-john.com/home.html

She'll be at Harrah's in Atlantic City, NJ and in Las Vegas in two weeks, plus several stops along the way...

Absolutely nothing was said about her missing old boyfriend by anyone at the show...maybe probably best, that way...

Thanks for the feedback Simon SE15...

RE: #4, It's about as nuts as I went for her voice at the show...what a great stylist she is...and it's all original work too...

I see what you mean about the spotlights in # 5...I tried it with the all blue back ground, a couple of times and for some reason ended keeping the lights in...Let's see if we get others to go for the simply blue back ground...I'd be game to change, and will consider it again...let's see what happens...

Thanks for the info! I see she's going to be very local soon:

November 8, 2006 - Westbury, Long Island, NY - Westbury Music Fair

I've been a fan of hers since the late 70's and early 80's... Grease, Xanadu... I remember once back in the 80's seeing a band perform covers of her songs at Disney World's Tomorrowland.

I know. ;) Thanks!

It looks like they don't allow "professional cameras" at the venue though - even "disposable cameras" are somewhat frowned upon. Bastards. $61+ per ticket, too.

Nice. See needs to open her eyes a bit more though.
I like the spotlight in #5, but would crop a bit from the lower end and right (yust a few mm). That way the dark folds in her jacket are gone, and she has a bit more room 'in front of her' relatively. (If you have a version with a bit more left and bottom, that might be an option as well...)

The show tickets go up in price with the stature of the celebrity across the board...ours were approx. $49.+ for premium seating on a mid week day...weekends, as in Thurs. through Sat. are a bit more...To get preferred seating I need to book well in advance and in a timely fashion...

I go to Long Island often, and find that yours and our retail prices are about the same...:D

As for cameras...we get a little bit of slack...but can't use extended lenses,no flash, and sometimes, depending on the act, the camera shooting time is limited to a couple of songs, or even, no cameras at all...

OH....Saaaandy....(ok, cheap Grease reference).

Nice shots, it is good to see her. So have they found her husband yet? Is he not still "missing" in Mexico somewhere?

You got it Rene', did the crop of the clothing shadow...the rest of that particular shadow, were the edges of a custom stage speaker...I had to shoot over the top of the pair of speakers...the stage is already five feet above the floor of the seating area, and these speakers were a good 15 or 16 inches tall, above that...shooting from my seat, in the very front row was a bit tricky...Olivia Newton-John recognized a quality camera and did not hesitate too much, to every so often, step right in front for a few moments...

Thanks for the critique...With the 50mm 1.4 lens and after some trimming...I'm content with the results...In Photo Shop (when I finally get it some day,) I would like to work on the backgrounds some more, and possibly dodge the color saturation in some areas of this set of pics...

Ah, good old Baja, CA...how convenient...evereybody from Hollywood hangs out there from time to time...Although longer than Florida, Baja is sparsely populated, with only one main road all the way through...If he was to be found, it would have been Baja...There was no mention of him at all by any one at the show...It's kind of sad to think of that particular situation...

She is a joy to photograph... I tried to be discrete about it... Here in this section of the Forum, we have some "in-house" rules, like: Dwight McCann's "do not shoot straight up the nose" standard rule of thumb...

Since the stage is about 4' 6" above the seating floor, I was shooting upward from the front row all evening... Open eyes were tough to get...

Second to last photo of the series, she is pointing at you. "This is the one selling my pictures on Ebay"...

Awesome series. I agree some PP is required, mostly for the wrinkles. The show must have been great though.

Thanks for sharing.

Say Mario, you're not saying some one is actually using this photo in marketing on Ebay are you? I haven't authorized any use of these photos to be sold on Ebay...

It's still early in the year...when they book blocks of shows at one time, then they post them all at once...

You might want to email the fan club coordinators in southern CA...they are on top of things there... She often tours the Reno/Tahoe Casinos and thereafter probably your areas...

No John, I am not saying that at all. Tour and Stage managers are always very overzealous as to who takes photos and why (at least in the pit, in front of the stage, and to the sides). So I was joking around, as Olivia seems to be pointing at you.

I have seen people take photos the first night of a concert, and then show up with posters the next day. Most have been busted, to my knowledge.

But it was all in a spirit of fun, if I were you, I would not do anything with those photos other than post them in the forum, maybe your private gallery, and portfolio.

Best of Luck,

Thanks for the feedback Mario...

Our venue is very secure with a large (very large) security staff, all radioed/wired to management and each other...

We even had the national guard come around with rocket launchers before big events just to check us out.

I live just down the road and reserve my tickets several months in advance...

I'll have to work with POTN regarding Olivia's picture being published in the 2007 book... Our venue and her people are in communication and clearing up any formalities should not be a problem...
