I do not plan to print pictures directly from a printer.
Do I really need a ROM upgrade?
In which way it will make my 10d better.

If none of the fixes in the firmware upgrade is applicable to you, there's no need to upgrade it. I'm still on the original version that came with the camera when it first came out in March (v.1.0.0). My motto is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". However, I alway suffix that with, "...unless there's a slim chance that it MAY break in the future for me." :D

However, there are some who would always like to be on the latest possible version of the firmware. They will install the upgrade whether a fix is applicable or not since there's always a chance that they may need the fix some time in the future.

The only gotcha is that you usually have to upgrade from a previous version (or versions).

Canon in the future may come out with a 3.0 patch that actually needs to patch the 2.0 version. If you still have version 1.0 then you would have to put on 2.0 first.

OK, no great problem, but what if 2.0 is no longer available on the 'net then ?

If nothing else, download the patch and keep it safe somewhere. The least you can do if you come to sell is to patch the camera up to the latest version.

All IMHO.

Cheers

Ian

So far, I haven't found this to be true with the 10D but...

...I DO download all the patches that Canon puts out just so I'll have it readily available when I do need it.

Very good suggestion, Ian! :)
